Aiden had to have tubes in his ears when he was 6 months old because we couldnt get rid of and ear infection. He has had one infection since then and he just turned 19 months old. He had an appt this morning to check them and the dr said the right tube is out and not working and there is fluid built up. He said it isnt infected yet but prob will be. His suggestion is to put tubes in again and take adnoids out while we are in there. I dont know why but I am kinda freaked out. He said we could also just check him in a month but I am afraid of damage to his ears. I had tubes when I was young and also as an adult. Emily had tubes once.

Should I go ahead and do it or wait and see if it heals itself?

Ugh. sad.gif Nora had tubes and we just had them checked last week - they have both fallen out (it's been a year and 8 months since she got them). I don't think I could go through all of that again. I would probably take a "wait and see" approach. Maybe he has grown out of it? (hope hope!!)

Have you ever looked into finding a DO for craniosacral therapy? We did it with Sophia when she had problems. Either that worked, or she just grew out of them, because the infections stopped.

What is it that freaks you out? Is the anesthesia or the surgery itself?
Personally, I'd do the surgery. It's short and is usually a good fix. Although, waiting a month to see if the fluid resolves itself likely won't hurt Aiden's ears. Logan had 6 or 7 ear infections his first year. But since then, he's only had 1. Our doc was one infection away from sending him for tubes. Maybe Aiden did outgrow the problem. I had tubes when I was 18 months and have had 2 infections since then. Although, my doc waited until my ear drum burst before recommending the tubes. I have hearing loss from that.

I dont know why I am getting freaked out. I am just scared for some reason that what if something happens. It seems to me that there is a greater chance of something happening to him... Like he has been more sick than Em and stuff. What if something happens. Oh and he wants to do an allergy test while we are in there because he says that it is sometimes connected. Allergic to what? He is 19 months old..wouldnt I know by now if he was allergic. I dont know I am just freaked out.

I can certainly understand the scared part. Logan has had 2 heart surgeries and we could have another one coming next year. At the very least, it's about 3 years off. Anesthesia is scary.

what i dont understand is, if the tube is already out or almost out, and he doesnt have an infection, why not leave it alone and see what happens? if its not bothering him or causing him pain, why start something
maybe if it falls out he wont need them now? what was the reason they came up with that he was getting so many ear infections..?
i dotn think i would just do it just because he said so, was this the ped.? i would get an ent consult.

It was an ent specialist. He said he would feel differently if it was May but with it being cold season he thinks it would be in our best interest to go ahead and do it. I also have a family history of ear infections. As far as why is he getting so many infections I guess I have not ever gotten an answer. They said that his canal or whatever it is called is still not mature. I am not sure that this is normal or not for his age.

That is pretty normal, a lot of child's ears aren't mature until they are 4 or 5 years old, this is what Hanna's ENT told me. Hanna had tubes at 6 months, she got 8 ear infections before then and I refused to put her on antibiotics again, they weren't working, so they put the tubes in and she never had another problem again. Hers have since fallen out but hers took a while, I think like a little over 2 years to be honest. I agree with everyone else though, I might wait it out a few weeks to see if he does/does not get an infection. If he doesn't have one why get another surgery, but if he does, then you know the problem is going to come back.
