colic question

Emma has been colicy lately, mostly in the evening or night, but not always. It usually starts with her wanting a bottle, then as she sucks she is crying and gupling, which of course results in major gas bubbles. Then she starts screaming... the past 2 nights, I couldn't even calm her down. I had to hand her to DH and he danced and sang to her and she eventually calmed down, made a few burps, and drank her bottle.

I brought it up to her ped last week and he said its just colic and she'll outgrow it.

I changed her bottles to th Dr. Browns, I have tried mylecon and gripe water,

any other suggestions.... I'm terrified for a day when DH is away

Oohhh, we have done Cholic. When I was nursing I cut all dairy out of my diet, now that she is on formula we are using soy. That in its self help immensely. I also found that swaddling, and carrying her around side lying really helped. Everyone would laugh at me, because we looked so silly, but Ally wasn't screaming, so I would wrap her tightly, and hold her in a cradle hold, only one handed, with her belly against my side, and her head in my hand.

I don't think its the formula because its not all the time, if she eats 7 times in 24 hours, she gets colicy 1 or 2 times

I do swaddle her at night

yesterday we had a good day, she didn't get herself so worked up that she became inconsolable (like sometimes)

I had read somewhere that 1/3 of babies get cholic, and 1/3 of those is due to a milk sensitivity. Hopefully you aren't one of those. Its a pain. we deffinately are.

Don't know what to tell ya. hopefully she gets over it. I also read that it usually gets better by 6 months. (we are still waiting on that too. ) little stinker.

I lived through colic - it is terrible. You are using the drops and honestly I don't know if there is anything else you can do but hold or wrap her tight and wait for the 4 month mark where she will improve

Have you tried switching her formula to the type for colicy babies? I know Enfamil makes one. Alexandra went through this every evening and we switched her to that enfamil I mentioned, it didn't make a difference, so then we went to the lactose free and now she's a happy happy baby! No problems! I'd try it! My ped said I could try any formula I thoought would help, but to give each one 3 days to work and to go through the ones I mentioned before going to Soy.

no doubt. now that I am on soy formula, I have no idea how to start introducing milk products. it would be way easier to just have stayed on milk based formula. (if that had been an option for us)
If it helps, my Ped said that all formulas, (milk, lacto free, soy...) have basically the same nutrition in them, so one is as good as another if you can find one that works for you.

Tara, Braedon was on Soy forumula and he did fine with the swith over to cow's milk around 11 months. I did have to warm it for him..but he showed no signs of discomfort at all. Weird!! Sometimes I think in the beginning their systems are just too fragile for the milk based stuff but as their digestive systems progress they are able to handle it!

i hope thats the case for us. I tried her on normal formula at 4 months (when cholic is supposed to be better) and at 6 months, but she didn't tolerate it. her face has broaken out from vegi wheels, ( they have a wierd powder on them) and from a cheeto too, so i wonder if its not an allergy.

I haven't tried switching her formula because I was going to wait to talkt o her ped about it. I really don't think its the formula because she is only colicy sometimes. Actually, the past 2-3 days have been a little better. For some reason, DH can calm her when I can't...I guess we are a good tag team

Have they ruled reflux? My nephew had 'colic' for 2 over months... ended up being reflux. They started him on meds and it helped a great deal. Hope she feels better soon, regardless of what it is!

what are the symptoms of reflux? She rarely spits up

reflux symptoms can range from violent puking to coughing to no symptoms....depends on the baby and the severity of the reflux. Braelynn has reflux. she mosly just coughs and spits up a bit. she is on zantac. google reflux, and u can find a list of the most common symptoms. good luck with figuring it all out. when she was in the hospital for her rsv they tested her for the reflux. they told me that 8 out of 10 babies have some degree of reflux, especially c-section babies, and premature babies. hope something here helps.

My nephew hardly ever spit up, he'd just cry a lot when/after he ate. They only tested him for it bc his "colic" didn't seem to be going away or getting better.
