Ok, this may sound silly, but when do you start taking your child to the dentist? Now that Ashley is getting teeth, do I need to brush them? Obviously I wouldn't use toothpaste, since the flouride is not good for them if they swallow it. But, do you need to brush their baby teeth? Do they make toothbrushes for babies? I can't see Ashley allowing me to do this.

biggrin.gif As you know my baby is now eight so things may have changed, but my pediatrician told me when they were little that I could use the wash cloth when I gave them a bath to clean their teeth. Just wipe them off with the wsh cloth and water. (Sounds funny I know).

The first time I took any of my children to the dentist was around 2 1/2.
The dentist didnt do much but it was a good experience to introduce them to the dentist and they got a really cool tothbrush and things to stain there teeth red. (haha)

I actually took them to a dentist who specialized in children and only treated children because I was always scared of the Dentist growing up and dreaded going, so I thought I would try to make it a good experience for them.

Now we all go to the same dentist and she is just as good!

no its a good question, even thought Kaitlin is not cutting teeth yet, I would like to know also. The only thing I have read is yes you can brush the tooth, and they do make baby tooth brushes. I have even see teethers that have soft brissles on one end for that purpose. As for when to take to dentist I have no clue so I will be interesed in finding out myself.

We took all of ours to the dentist before their first tooth - at least they got to have their mouths checked, and got used to the experience. They do make baby "finger" brushes - you slide them on your finger and clean their teeth and gums with them, but washcloths do work just as well (and cheaper!) You don't need toothpaste and it seems to feel good to them.

If they are teething, you might try it with a frozen washcloth.

My DD first dentist appt. was at 3yr. I called my dentist and asked at the time. 3 is the usual age for a first cleaning and floride treatment. I really wanted to get her in so she wouldn't have a fear or hatred for the dentist like her mom..lol.

Hello!! I don't think it is a silly question either. I actually asked my doctor when is the best time because my daughter has 7 teeth!!! Good Ole Doc told me that generally 3 years is the age of the first appt. Unless there is a concern for the condition of the baby's teeth.
