I put a bottle of expressed milk in our bottle warmer last night (in a bottle) and I left it well after the light went off. So it was SUPER hot when I took it out. Woops. I was curious if it's bad to feed a baby milk that has become too hot. I know it's a bad idea to put BM in a microwave, but what about it getting too hot just in water? I let it cool, of course, before feeding it to Wesley, but I was wondering if it's a bad idea because a super high temp can break down the enzymes or something. Anyone know? Is there a written temperature that you should never excede??
I know you shouldn't give a baby hot milk for safety reasons (obviously), but I'm wondering about whether it does something to the milk, kwim? -------------------- Rae SAHM to Wil (4) and Wesley (2) ~ Wife to Richard 10/20/01

It more than likely killed all the antibiodies in it, but I don't think it would be bad. Although you should only re-warm something once...in this case IMO I'd personally throw it out and not re-warm it.

Would taking it out of the freezer, letting it thaw and then warm it be considered rewarming it? Or do you mean putting it in the warmer then putting in a second time? Also, I will sometimes pump and put the milk in the fridge for the next day rather than freeze it. So it's too cold to serve, so I put the bottle in the bottle warmer. Isn't that okay? I'm confused. -------------------- Rae SAHM to Wil (4) and Wesley (2) ~ Wife to Richard 10/20/01

If you pump milk, put it in the fridge, then warm it later that is just regular warming. If you pump milk, freeze it and then warm it that's just regular warming. It's when you warm it, he won't even take any of it then you decide to warm it again later, that's re-warming it. Now if you warmed it, he took an ounce out of 3 ounces and you want to re-warm it later, that's not advised because their saliva messes up the milk.
Since you had already warmed that one you mentioned in your earlier post and you warmed it way too hot, I would dispose of that one. Room temp is really as warm as it should get to being warmed up. Hot is not only dangerous to baby as you mentioned but it really does kill a lot of the good in it. -------------------- ~*Karen*~
