| Hey Fathers I'm looking up to you because you already know. I'm still in the dark, but looking forward to playing my role. I was just given a book to read, Dude, You're Gonna Be A Dad! (John Pfeiffer), and just beginning to read. I wonder, are books the way to go? While I can get the same random, multiple ways to do things through these boards, I don't want to get book happy. 1- I'm not a big reader. 2- I can get the same info here for free. For those of you who went this route, how has the book(s) helped you in preparation? Can you recommend something good and focused on the dad? |

I read what to expect when you're expecting, and loved it. There's a what to expect book for dads that I haven't read, but I'd like to get it for my Dh the next time around.  The thing I like about these types of books is you aren't expected to sit down and read the whole thing at once... there's a chapter for each month and you read each chapter as you get to that point in the pregnancy. Week by week books are nice too. | so capitolc, did the book reading help? And what would you recommend after your first 4-5 months of parenthood? I've been a dad for 24 years now (24, 17, 13) and it is definitely the greatest thing ever. Of course that doesn't mean there have NOT been challenges! @MKD, wow 24 years is sooo far off for me. I'm still trying to survive the first year. heck, I just survive the first Christmas and as good as it was, the amount of floor space needed to house and play with my son, is bound to grow after each month. To answer the comment tho... I didn't even finish reading the book. While it was speaking in a more causal tone, the little jokes and playfulness lost me a few times. Sometimes, I'm a bit too serious, and I wanted a bit more serious as my first read. Call me dry, call me technical, the book didn't keep my attention. However, I will recommend the book as a 2nd book to new fathers!! It had its moments and the biggest part that I took from it, was just to be extra attentive to the mother during the ever changing body and moods. It might be wrong, but my attention is not quite all on the mother as I now have to split my time taking care of our son, AND things around the house, AND work (then myself). But now I got a new book. "A Fathers First: How My Life Became Bigger than Basketball" (Dwyane Wade) As my life has already changed (for the better), I can't wait to dive into this one AND finish it. |
