Macie went to the dr last week because her fingers were peeling. I don't mean dry flaking, I mean huge sheets. It would start out looking sort of like a blister, then the next day the skin under her nail was coming up and by the end of the day or the next, a piece of skin the size of a nickel was hanging off.

The dr said it was eczema, which I didn't agree with in the first place but figured since I'm not a dr I'd take her word for it. We used a cortisone cream and it helped but didn't really fix it. Called the dr, she called in an antifungal cream although a pharmacist and the school nurse both said anything fungal would most likely start between the fingers.

Tonight Macie came down the stairs screaming because now her toes are doing it too. She says it doesn't itch or hurt except that it peels fairly deep and the new skin is very tender. I've googled it and two things keep coming up which I'm fairly certain aren't the problem.

Can you get a referrral to a dermatologist? When it comes to skin issues, regular docs usually have a hard time diagnosing it because there are so many things it can actually be.

A friend of mine's daughter had the same thing happen and it was a strep infection. The regular doc thought it was mild eczema, but it was a dermatologist who finally diagnosed it.

My Dad had something similar happen when he was in the military. It started with his hands peeling just like you described and it turned out he was alergic to one of their cleaning agents used in the motor pool. It took a while to figure it out until he got to a derm who helped almost instantly.

So, I'd get a referral to a derm.

hug.gif hug.gif I hope you are able to get to the bottom of it.

I had the same condition as a child and they did consider it excema. Of course, I'm a million years old, so maybe they consider it something else now. laugh.gif I, too, would take her to a dermatologist. Both my nephews have a different skin condition but both were misdiagnosed for years by the ped. The dermatologist correctly identified and treated it and all is MUCH better now. Peds are great for the typical but for atypical stuff I think it's best to see a specialty doc. JMO, though.

the large pieces of skin remind me of psorisis.

I hope you can get her into a derm. asap.

poor thing, I bet it really bothers her to see that skin coming off.

Why didn't I think of a derm?! Thanks, I think I will go that route. I talked to the dr again this morning and she said "Lets just let it run it's course and see what happens" but the problem is, so far the course doesn't have an end.

Macie was very, very sick during the move and I wondered if she might have had strep....I never thought about the fact it could show up somewhere other than in her throat.

Thanks everyone smile.gif

How is Macie doing? Did you ever find out what was causing her hands and feet to peel? Is she doing better now?

She has an appointment with a derm at the end of February, I couldn't believe nobody could see her sooner but I guess it gives us time to see if it repeats itself or stops. Her feet still look fairly bad, her hands have slight peeling on the outer edges now but not the giant chunks like her fingers and toes. I'm very curious to see if it starts again or was a weird one time thing.
