What do you think of the name...

Owen

Do you think it is too old, wierd, or just different. Or is it a good name?
By the way we are having a boy.

Owen is my Grandmother's maiden name, and we were going to pair it with Reed which is my DH's middle name. To make...

Owen Reed

Good? Bad?

Beth

Great name and I also love when names mean something---as I tell my children, --you are named after people who love you.

Well I don't mean this in a bad way at all, but that's my dog's name! But honestly, I sometimes wish we didn't name our dog that so we can use it if we have another boy! I love it! And I really like Reed as well!!!  smile.gif They sound great together!

No offense taken to your dog's name. My neighbor has a dog named Otis, and I love that name too, I would love to name a boy Otis, but I know if I am standing on my back portch hollering for my son, the dog would come too! rolling_smile.gif
Plus, even if we happen to move or they move I would always think of that dog everytime I called his name.

I like what we've chosen, althought it isn't final yet. But if I name this first baby Owen Reed, then I am going to have to be just as creative with any consecutive baby. I don't like over used names, my dh wants Edward or Jacob or David, but think back to when you were in school, how many Jacob's were there? Not to offend anyone who named their son any of those names, I just would like to branch out a bit with names but still stick to family names which is hard.

Anyways I know I have gone off on a tangent.

Beth

Owen Reed sounds nice. The two names pair well together.

I can definitely relate on wanting a name that's not run-of-the-mill but still meaningful. However in my family there are just so many repeated Franks and Williams and Johnathans, that finding a name with meaning was difficult. We had wanted to use Michael, my fiance's name, but if used the same middle (Raymond) he'd be Michael Raymond P----- III. I tend to think that numerals tend to just look weird on people other than popes and kings... at least after the second one. Though my fiance writes his as Michael Raymond P----- II, and not "Jr." I always wanted a name that was different, perhaps a little old-fashioned sounding and so I came up with Tristan.(And no, not because of Legends of the Fall) Michael seemed to be the perfect middle name.

I tend to visualize a lot when it comes to choosing things. For instance, after settling on Tristan Michael, I started saying it... a lot. I pictured myself introducing my son to other people as "My son Tristan." I pictured him signing his name, handing out business cards as an adult with "Tristan M. P------" emblazoned on them. Heck I even visualized myself yelling his full name when he'd done something wrong. It sounds weird, but it really gave me a way of getting comfortable with a name. I tend to think if the name hadn't worked so well, I would have had a much harder time visualizing myself using it.
