Preston was a preemie when he was born and was in the NICU for 10 days. When he was first born, he had donor milk until I could get my milk in. Once mine came in, I'd pump it and take it to the hospital for him. Then when he came home, we had some trouble with latching but got past that and so I've been breastfeeding since. (I didn't get to breastfeed my first sad.gif ) Every Tuesday or so, I go to a weigh in for breastfeeding mothers. I take him in, undress him, have him weighed in pounds. Then the nurses weigh him to see what he weighs before eating (in grams, I think, I'm not sure) and then again after to see how much milk he has transferred. He's just 5 months and weighs 17 lbs. But he only eats 3 oz at a feeding (both breasts) and I can alway pump more. Should I be worried that he's only getting 3 oz? Or should I not worry about it because he's gaining weight so well?

How frequent are the feedings? As long as he's gaining weight I don't think I'd worry.

I wouldn't worry at all, it sounds like he is gaining well and is healthy. You should give yourself a pat on the back. It must have taken a lot of dedication to continue to BF under those circumstances. thumb.gif

When Raygen was in the NICU they wanted her to eat a certain amount in a certain time frame. And what she didnt eat she got in her GI tube. But they wanted her to get as much as she could. And she had to gain weight at the same time.

He eats every 3 hours, sometimes every two and sometimes he'll go a good 5 hours. I would assume that he gets more after the longer stretch, but I don't know how much he gets at that time. He seems to eat more during the night. I feel like he's eating all night.

That, plus his weight gain, sounds like he's eating plenty.
