Cleaning is the function of the dental hygenist more than the actual dentist. She'll come in and use utensils to scrape tartar and plaque off the tooth surface, floss, likely use a gritty, toothpaste like substance and a rotating tool to finish up. How comfortable the experience is largely depends on the skill of the hygenist.
This might sound strange (I don't mind dentists but hate oral surgery and this was how I hit upon it) but ask them to put the lead apron on you while they work. It's like a nice warm hug the whole time. For some reason, that slight pressure really calms me down!! Good luck today!! -------------------- Cheryl, Olivia's mom

UH....I have to go soon too....but I keep putting it off.....I get anxiety attacks really bad and I usually have to end up spending 500 bucks for them to knock me out.

I just went this morning!! HATED IT! But luckily my teeth are always better off than I assume...phew...because I'm not a good flosser! Cleaning is when they pick of the plaque with that sharp hook thing, then they polish, then they floss to make sure all the plaque has been removed. My teeth are now squeaky clean...well maybe not after that diet coke I just drank...

I hate the dentist, but make sure to go every year and take my kids. I start with them when they are around 2. I stopped going to the dentist when I was 20-25 but then decided to go again since my teeth felt very weird LOL no "polished" feel
