Toddler asthma

Does anyone have experience with this? My daughter is going to the doc Friday to be evaluated..She wheezes when she plays really hard..I'm really worried and am not sure if this is allergies or asthma..

My daughter has asthma... but she was diagnosed at age 4 yrs. She is on 2 puffers, one she takes daily and one for emergencies, and also nasonex spray. and singular. The asthma could be allergy induced, asthma can be induced by a cold or illness, and some are more severe. My daughter wheezes if she running for a long time or horse playing. One good thing though is when they get it at this young of age they can outgrow it...

It can be a really scary thing, but it can be controlled. There are lots of good meds out there, way more than even when I was growing up.

Hopefully you will get some answers when she has her test.

Zander has asthma, but not severe. He isn't on daily medication, just has his rescue puffer for when he needs it. usually if hes running around in the grass or jumping on the trampoline If I know ahead of time he will be doing these things I give him a puff before he starts and he is fine.

My son had asthma as a toddler but outgrew it by about five. It was triggered by a grass allergy so I made sure to keep a close eye on him at parks, etc but now he's totally free of it. It sounds scary but like Tara said, it's very controllable

Did her eval go good? did she end up having asthma?

i was just told yesterday that my son has asthma although we have thought that for awhile. he is on 5 different meds 3 of which he takes daily. Neither my hubby or i have ever delt with this kinda thing. how do we learn triggers, and friends are also telling us the meds are going to effect him later in life (pednisolone,pu lmicort). does any one have any info to help us?

i have a good bit of info, but it would help if I had come specifics. I am an respiratory Therapist and deal with asthma all the time.

5 different meds seem like a lot. I have no idea how old your son is, so I will just say that GENERALLY, what we do is get you on a asthma rescue medication that relaxes the airways and opens them up so he can breath easier. This would be a medication like albuterol, ventolin, (which are the same med) and Xopenex. these can be done every few hours on a scheduled basis, or just before activity, or just when there are symptoms, it just depends on what your Dr is telling you to do.

then we will put them on a controller med that will help to reduce the swelling and hyper sensitivity of the airways. these are steroids like flovent or pulmicort and you need to rinse his mouth out after giving a med like these because they can cause oral thrush. This type of med needs to be given daily, either once or twice depending on what your Dr wants.

In general Asthma medications are very safe, the inhaled ones are absorbed into the lung tissue and just stay in the lung. The steroids are not the same kind of steroids like body builders use.

IMO, The big worry is to get Asthma under control, that is way more important then how the meds effect him later, which I will tell you, I have been on asthma meds my entire life and have not been adversely effected in all my 31 years. But asthma is nothing to mess around with. It can be easily contorlled, but if you mess around with it can really be dangerous.
