I've exhausted all of the advice I have for my sis and my 1yo niece, Fiona. She is a great nurser - good weight and meeting all her milestones. But, she is REALLY not interested in solids. She'll eat a bite and then start signing for nursing. My sister is happy to oblige, but would really like her to start eating more and nursing less. She already offers solids first which is the one piece of advice I had for her.

Also, Fiona is not a sleeper. She has always napped 15min at a time and at night wakes probably 3-4 times. Sis has tried to cut out night feedings, but she is worried too since she's not eating much otherwise. They are all sleep deprived at this point.

Fiona is also allergic to dairy, but they just found that out a few weeks ago. I wonder if she equates eating with an upset tummy and that's why she doesn't want to chance it, KWIM?

Any suggestions?

Has you sister cut diary out of her diet?
My oldest ds was allergic to dairy and I couldn't have any while I was nursing him. Before I found this out, he'd scream and cry a little while after nursing. So I'd nurse him more thinking he was hungry, more crying. Everyone said it was colic. I cut out dairy and that was the answer.
If she has an upset tummy after nursing, maybe that is why she is nursing so often. She isn't making the connectin yet that is what is causing her pain. She just wants more to feel better.

My ds was so allergic, I couldn't even have 4oz of milk! He eventualy weaned and had to have soy formula till he was 2. He did outgrow the allergy eventually. He is 9 now and shows no sign of it.

So what you are saying is that your neice is exactly like Katherine? lol

Since I'm a martyr, I just went ahead and nursed for two years and somehow lived on very little sleep. Are they co-sleeping? That was my only salvation.

I never was able to get K to eat much of anything. A bite of chicken nugget, a few bites of fruit, a few cheerios....it was brutal. I never did figure out if it was a reflux issue either. However, my old sitters son did have undiagnosed reflux and he had to have a feeding therapist at age 2 along with the meds.

I'd probably rule out reflux, get pain meds for the baby if it is an issue, stick with nursing for the time being, try to offer solids before bed (that may work with at least one or two night wakings), and just keep a nibble tray (Dr Sears has some great info on his site) available for her to snack on. Try to get her to eat a bit of solids before nursing.

The good news is it does end...kind of. K now sleeps through the night, in her own bed but she still doesnt eat much compared to other kids her age.
