Okay, We have 5 kids, the youngest is 3. (i know some of you might be saying - Your nursing a three yr old???- ) So yes, I am. I don't want to anymore, but I am. Never would I have ever thought I would ever nurse a child this long, but our last baby had so many illnesses that nursing was the one thing he had going for him. Our pediatrician begged us not to wean him until he weaned himself, so he stopped at 2 1/2. Then comes the next baby and pow. She has NO interest in stopping! Now i've been working on it. There is no daytime nursing anymore, and now we ONLY nurse in HER big girl bed at night, but now I have to lay down with her, and still wake up at least 1-3 times a night to nurse her. So, what I really want is advice to slow it even more, even end it. She can throw a fit like no one else so, if I don't nurse her at night she would wake up the whole house (not pretty!). All the others eventually weaned themselves - there was never guilt!! Now I am totally filled with guilt watching this baby beg to be nursed. HELP!!!!!

Congratulations!! I've nursed a 4 year old LOL. I've never had to deal with weaning, as mine weaned when I got pregnant again. I would've liked them to nurse longer, but they didn't want to.
If she's not ready to wean, I wouldn't force it on her. It's still very important to her obviously. She will wean when she's ready. Is there a specific reason why you want her to wean? -------------------- ~*~Mollie~*~ Mom to Logan, Quentin, Ethan, Hannah, Kayla, & Abigail! |

i think you should be so proud of how long you have breast fed her. I cant imagine how hard it is.
what does she drink from during the day? could u start with just sleeping with her maybe and offering her that cup? instead of the breast? i am sure she wont like it, and since you are there might reject the cup...I think thats a hard one. but I have a child that can throw a fit like no other, so I feel for you. congrats on how long you have kept this up. -------------------- Stacy, wife to Peter, mom to Caleb, Jakob, and Andrew

congrats on going so long, if your really wanting to wean I would first stop the waking up at night to nurse. you will need to come up with some type of plan to do this and stick with it, either offer in a cup or do some kind of reward system. then once thats done and going you can work on the one just before bed.
or just stop cold turkey depends on what you and she will be better with. Its not going to be easy no matted what you do, I BF for 15 months and would have gone longer but she weened herself. just remember what ever plan of action you pick stick with it. -------------------- Di ~ mommy to Kaitlin wife to David

Thanks for the ideas. I am hoping to wean because it's just plain hard on everyone. Because if she want's to nurse (where ever we are) and i say no, she has a MAJOR meltdown. We own a little coffee shop and when I'm working obviously I can't nurse her, but I also can't have a wildly screaming kid either. So, because she was throwing such fits we decided it was in everyone's best interest if she started to wean. I really appreciate your support, there's not much of that around when I'm nursing a 3 yr. old. Even my sister got on my case the other day for it! I was shocked! But thanks again, you all had some great ideas.

I guess I would try distracting her with anything that might work, especially around the times she wants to nurse the most. Have your DH or someone else help you at those times if you can.
