So this month has been interesting with all the new things Jakob has picked up.
It started with one night that his feet were really hurting him, and he asked me to rub them, and I tried and nothing I did was making him feel better..so I asked him to try to just go to sleep..and he says to me, in a very matter of fact tone, I hate you mommy, just leave..
It broke my heart.

I later told him that saying you hate someone was really mean and hurtful and he shouldnt say it...

but today out of the blue, I hadnt even been near him..he said to me, "mommy, you are stupid!"
I said to him that stupid was a bad word in our house..and he wasnt to say it again..that it hurts someones feelings to hear it..and Jake said ok..but now I am wondering if I am making these words stick in his head by telling him he cant say them..if I had ignored them would it have been better???

what do you do when your child says something mean or a bad word?

we have always told alyssa that we do NOT say bad words in our house and she is SO tender hearted that if she had accidently said it (not realizing) she would cry when we told those were bad words. I think it is better to tell them not to say them because when they hear them from others it can keep him from saying them again and ignoring him he is more than likely to keep saying them.

Kids sometimes stay stuff and they have no idea what it means. I think it is good that you explained to him that those are hurtful words and why you shouldn't say them.

Ashley would still never say those words today.

We just tell them they are not nice words and that they hurt peoples feelings. Then we remind them of some recent time when they might have felt hurt by something in comparison. It's the repeatitive reminder that really works the best for us anyways. smile.gif

Whenever I hear the kids say a bad word or sometimes they will ask if a certain word is bad..I tell them to put it on their POTTY WORD LIST...This is a list of words they make a mental note not to say...It works great with Mckaylee and Russell is learning it too.

Emily knows not to say those words. I have always told her they are bad words and we dont use them in our house or anywhere else. If and when she hears someone else say them she whispers to me that they sad a bad word. School should be interesting...she will hear way more than stupid or dumb. dry.gif

I think as parents we definitly want to make sure our children are aware of what words are unacceptable as early as they start saying them. Also, we as parents must set the good example by not using those words or phrases ourselves. If the kids use them where is the most likely place that they learned them?

that is just total phooey. I know people who curse like sailors (myself included) our children wouldn't dare curse.
maybe onece or twice at this age but it was explained and stopped, never happened again.
