I developed a big lump on my hand a few weeks ago, and went to the doctor who said it was a ganglion cyst. They don't know what causes them, and the treatment is usually just to leave them alone. It is causing pain in my joints though, so I'm going this morning to get it drained. Hopefully, it does the trick but sometimes they just come back.

I have one on my hand, but it doesn't cause any pain so I am leaving it alone. It's not that noticeable and I probably had it for awhile before I ever noticed it. If it is causing you pain, it's good that you are getting it drained.

I had one on the side of my foot in HS that was removed and never came back. My husband had one at the base of his neck taken off a few years ago and it never returned either.
Good luck at your appointment today! -------------------- Cheryl, Olivia's mom

I have one on my left wrist. It doesn't hurt at all, I don't even remember it's there usually. I have a friend that had one on her right wrist and it was painful so she had it removed a couple months ago. She said the recovery was a breeze. I would think draining it would hurt more than just removing it!

Dh has one on his wrist that bothers him sometimes too, the doctor told him to just leave it unless it gets bigger or causes more pain

I had it drained this morning, but the doctor said there's about a 50% chance it'll come right back. Argh! The draining wasn't that big of a deal, but I have to keep it kind of immobilized today - not easy.

I wonder if there is a difference between draining it and removing it for return rate. Tonight, my husband said that they did drain his once or twice and it came back. They didn't want to remove it as first recourse because of the location (base of the neck). It didn't come back when they removed it though. Glad it wasn't very painful!! Good luck not using your hand! -------------------- Cheryl, Olivia's mom

Yeup...
http://forums.parentingclub.com/index.php?...topic=65823&hl= (sorry I deleted the surgery photos from my flickr account so they aren't there anymore... they give me the heebies now!) Mine was/is on the front of my hand and was attached to the artery so it has caused a lot of pain. This is what it looked like presurgery And these are from tonight; (the purplish line underneath is the scar from surgery) So... as you can see... the surgery worked wonders! And for the question as to the return rates differing. I was told by my surgeon that the draining only works about 50%/60% of the time and with the surgery there's about a 5% chance that it will come back. I suppose I'm just the overachiever This post has been edited by Kentuckychick on Feb 27 2008, 05:51 PM |

I have one on the top of my wrist that flares up from time to time. It's more like a big knot in my joint and has been there since I was small. It does hurt every now and then. I have a hard time doing push ups and the like b/c of my wrist.

I have one in my left wrist and one on the top of my foot - I've had both for years and the pain comes and goes. I've always meant to go to the doctor for it but I'm too lazy.

I've got a huge one in my back, and a smaller one in my neck, both of which I'm leaving alone. The one in my neck causes some discomfort, but I don't even notice the big one in my back.

That's EXACTLY what I said!! Especially since I turned 25 and have new insurance now Actually though, it's not quite as bad as it looks. The coloring in the photo gives it an odd color when in reality it's just that because of the last surgery the skin is stretched much tighter around it this time. I do think it's bigger. When I bend my wrist it looks exactly like the before photo (in which I had it extended) so it's definitely a bit different looking this time. No puss or infection though -- just lots of fluid. I'm hoping to get it drained once more and then maybe one more surgery. For me though because of where it's located (right hand on the wrist) the recovery was much more difficult. -------------------- ~Rachel~ Godmommy to;Connor (September '04) & Caydence (August '06)
