ok, andrew started solids last weekend. he wont be 6 months old until the end of the month, but he was grabbing food off plates, and opening his mouth for a spoon whenever someone else was eating..so we took those cues to start. he is 15.10 pounds.
he sits up fine in the high chair. but everytime i give him a bite when he tries to swallow he gags then swallows it. i thought at first he just hated the rice cereal. but he did it with sweet potatoes yesterday. i did 5 days of rice before going to a veggie. so is he just not ready? do kids always start out with a hyper sensative gag reflex? i am just very nervous because of jakes history.... -------------------- Stacy, wife to Peter, mom to Caleb, Jakob, and Andrew

I would just keep practicing with him - keep an eye on it and if it isn't better in another week or so call your Ped...

I would just keep trying. It might just be the taste of it. Since it's not something he's used to. KWIM? Of course if it continues, I would ask the doc. just to be safe. Hope it gets easier for you.

Ashley didn't really gag, but I started her out with cereal that was really super thin. I think I added more BM than what the package called for and then after she worked her way up to a thicker cereal, I started her on the baby food.
He may not be ready yet. But, maybe he just needs more practice and time to get used to the texutres... but I'd try starting with a thinner cereal (almost a liquid). -------------------- |

I'd just wait. He doesn't need solids right now anyway. He might not be ready for it.

I think he does show cues of being ready, but to this day Aubrey gags on some foods and she is almost 10 months old. Some babies just have more of a gag reflex than others, the texture of some foods just cause it to bring this on. If he is acting like he likes it, I say keep trying and work through it. She has gotten 10x better, poor kid, used to gag on everything, but if you'd stop after she gagged she'd scream for more, then she'd gag again, but she eventually stopped and now she hardly ever does it unless I give her a thicker food, like those Stage 2 foods with meat in them.

I think I remember Dylan gagging some. Peyton is now on jar food and doesn't gag. Do you warm up the food? Maybe that might help. Sorry I'm not much help.....

Aiden gags sometimes, and did on baby food as well sometimes. It is normal to some extent. They wont know how to properly swallow unless they are given that chance to learn, IMO.

Carly did that at first - it seemed like the texture made her gag. It's a new sensation, just keep trying!
