We got a notice this week that they have changed the recess for Olivia's grade (1st). They now get a 15 minute recess (previously 20-25 min), then lunch, then back to class. It's the only recess they get all day. That seems awfully short to me. The public schools I'm in get 30 minutes a day but do have a slightly longer school day. I'm going to ask the question next week at my P/T conference but was wondering what other schools are doing? How long does your child get for recess?

That does sound short. I think kids need that little break and 15 mins just doesn't sound like long enough. Once they get started on something it will be time to go in. I remember playing kickball, tag, basketball ... all kinds of things at recess. No way they could do that in 15 minuntes.

In Kinder, Ashley only goes a half day so she doesn't really get recess. If they finish their work early, sometimes the teacher will take them out to the playground before it is time to go home. But, that has only happened twice since September. But, like I said, she's only there about 2-1/2 hours. I wonder what they will get next year though... hmmm.

I'm not sure what the other grades get so I may be no help, but Kylie gets 20 minutes at school in Pre-K. Everything they do is 20 minutes each, though. I think 15 minutes isn't enough time at all IMO.

well Kaitlin is in preK2 and I think they get 20-30minutes and somedays will go out 2 times, she is there from 9a-1p. As long as the weather is nice they go out at least once if not more. If they cant go outside they will take them to the gym.

My first graders only get the 20 minutes they get with lunch. They get P.E. twice a week for 30 minutes. I just don't have time for any more, with NCLB and the high stakes testing. But I keep my students pretty active in the room, and we have center time for 30 minutes a day, with play centers on Fridays.
