My son is finally old enough to play and is now in T-ball, granted it is unorganized and such but I have been waiting for it to happen. Now I can't wait until he can play football since that is my passion and I think he will be really good at.

All of my kids were in sports. Now they're mostly grown and moved on to whatever interests them today.

The kids were involved and I coached all of the following sports:
T-Ball, Little League Baseball, basketball, soccer and lacrosse.

Football was a bit far away, and my children were relatively small compared to most their ages, so we didn't do that.

I pushed my eldest into baseball, a sport he really didn't like. If he hadn't rebelled he never would have touched a lacrosse stick. And I wouldn't have learned a thing.

I kind of pushed my second son a little harder than I should have in soccer and lacrosse. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't a bad athlete, he just wasn't really interested in it and, at the time, some of the pushing may have hurt our relationship. When he got into high school he joined band and thrived. As a macho-dad (see that thread wink.gif ) I wasn't really keen on the whole band thing at first. Then I saw how much hard work and teamwork was involved and started to change my mind. I also saw he had a natural talent for leadership and it grew from that activitiy. And I, reluctantly, but then proudly, became a band dad.

My point is, we all have things that were our favorites when we were kids. It's important for us to let our kids decide what their "thing" is going to be. Lacrosse and soccer were unheard of when I grew up. I played football (I didn't get good at it until high school, and didn't play there because the coach and I didn't see eye-to-eye), basketball (I did play that in high school). The kids who played soccer weren't the "cool kids." Understanding the game as I do now I see my adolescent conclusions were WRONG.

Lacrosse is bloodsport. Soccer requires subtle finesse. I learned to love those sports too, through my children's love of them. My advice is, guide them, teach them, but let them choose what they like. thumb.gif

I am not looking to push him into anything, I just want him to be active...a lot of kids nowadays I see strapped to a TV or PS2 or something and I don't want that for him, I want him to do whatever he enjoys

I didn't mean to seem like I was getting preachy there. I just wanted to share a minor mistake that I made, which could have become a major one if I hadn't come to my senses. ITA regarding not wanting the kids sitting in front of whatever passes for "the tube" as they grow. All of my kids spend a lot of time outside, still today. I think it's sad to see kids who don't know how much fun it is to meet others and develop relationships.

We are a serious sports family. My boys (14 and 11) play on several baseball teams, as well as hockey, basketball, and tackle football. My dd (4) does beginner gymnastics. Both my dh and I are heavily involved in youth sports- coaching, organizing leagues, etc. It's a big part of our lives.
Both of us were pretty successful high school athletes. I can't say that we pushed our kids into sports- but particularly with boys, if they're good at it, which my kids are, they naturally gravitate to it. It's a big part of their whole socialization process. It's also a big part of our family culture. My kids have gotten alot out of their involvement in sports- and it's clearly a passion of theirs'. Like Ed said, though, the drive has to come from them. We're here to support, fortify, guide- but it's their gig.

Well most people don't think this is a sport (I disagree happy.gif ) but Kylie is in tap, tumbling and ballet right now and has been since last year. She wants to play in t-ball and soccer as soon as spring hits. Dh doesn't want her to play soccer because he despises the game, but I think it will be fun.

I think it is ok for a hobby but if Tanner wants to play to stay in shape more power to him.

I am letting Kait explore things she is interested in. Right now she takes gymnastics, dance and piano. She tried ballet but was board. I think it might have been the studio, it was very repetive and very little new, she is asking to try again. As she gets interested and wants to try new things I most likely will let her so she can find her nitch. There are a few things she wants to try but she is not old enough yet.

Robbie takes swimming lessons periodically and he's in Navy Cadets.

Unfortunetly (well not really unfortunate because he's his own self) he's not following in dh's footsteps at all. DH is big into all sorts of different sports, and Robbie doesn't really like playing team sports much which is odd, because he's all about teamwork etc..

Desiree is in softball, slow pitch right now but is planning on going to a week long camp this next spring to learn fast pitch! She's really good, they just came in second during a championship last season! She is also in cheerleading this year, this is her first year. She's really good at it. She's also taken gymnastics for a year, she also played in a coed flag football league, she didn't like that very much though! We just encourage her to do something besides watch TV and play video games and talk on the phone, something active and active she is, she's into everything. Hanna will start t-ball when she is 4 and I'm also thinking of either gymnastics or karate, something to direct all of her energy wacko.gif

Well out here in no-man's land there are NO activities for kids under five so my kids aren't in anything yet...but Brooke is already excited about cheerleading so she'll probably be in that for sure. Madison's a rough little kid already and built pretty solid so DH is trying to condition her to be our little linebacker. emlaugh.gif He wanted a boy... rolling_smile.gif

Over the years we have been involved in many sports, with soccer being the latest. My youngest daughter who is now 13 has played soccer since she was 8. It was a lot of fun, so much that I decided to join an adult soccer league and had a blast doing it.

One thing I've tried to do over the years is encourage my kids to be involved in things that interest them without pushing too hard to have them fulfill my childhood challenges. As I have attended many baseball, softball and soccer events, you always come across that one or two parents that are seriously screwed up. wacko.gif

Team sports provide many lessons for our kids and hopefully we as parents can provide the encouragement and support to reinforce those lessons.

Well a male child always inherits the same personality of their dad through genes & all these gets portrayed, when they attains specific age criteria. But its really great when we see our kids grow up with the liking that had during certain age & that liking should get promoted in a better manner.
