I wondered what others thought of this? I'm still trying to process the article and not quite sure how I feel. I feel terrible for these kids that have mental issues and because the adoptive parents can't take care of them they relinquish them to the state. Genetic parents can't do that, so why should they?

This article just saddens me for so many reasons. sad.gif

What are your thoughts?

Its a sad situation for sure. I feel bad mostly for the parents. This isn't just a problem with adoptive children, but all children. Both of my brothers had some severe mental problems due to an accident that happened in our family and my mom couldn't find help for them. They both needed more then just counseling once a week..kwim? My mom finally found a childrens mental facility that she placed them into that was inpatient. Neither went without a fight. They provided anger management, counseling,, family counseling and much more. Treatment came out of my moms pocket.

I saw a show about kids with mental illness a couple years back and there was one family where the parents had to live seperately...They lived in 2 apartments in the same complex...one with the child with mental issues and one with a new baby that the other child talked about killing. Very scary. They were in financial ruin trying to keep both their children safe. If I remember right the one talking about killing the other wasn't even very old...Toddler age to 5 at the most.

I can see where these families are backed into this situation. On one hand you love the child no matter what and can't get him help. He or she is a threat to you and your other children. If you give hiim up all your children are safe and your child is getting the help they desperately need. Birth parents could also relinquish their rights too. It's not an option most people would use, but most of us are not afraid of our own children and I can't even imagine that. I met one little boy in the facility my brothers were in on family day. I asked him what he did to be there....he stabbed his mom with a knife. He said it like it was no big deal.

There is a lady an Army wives website that I go to that had to relinquish rights to her biological son in order to keep him out of her house and get him the help he needed. He even told them that he had been planning to kill his whole family and they still wanted her to bring him back home with her. So this isn't just an adopted kids issue...its everyones kids.

I see what you are saying Brianne, and I didn't even think of that. I guess I just assumed a birth parent would never give up their rights, but I guess they sometimes have no choice. It all still saddens me, terribly. These poor kids and these poor families sleep.gif

Yes it is true that adoptive parents behaves irresponsibly with kids having mental problem, where the kids mostly suffers. I believe there is a requirement of strict laws to make these people pay for what they have done.
