Hi,

We live in the UK with our fifteen year old daughter. Seems to be the typical rebellious teen. She's still sulking because mum grounded her for a weekend. Her mum is usually tougher than me!

Hi Tim, and welcome!!

I'm Alice from New York. My kids are a bit younger than your daughter-- 2, 5, and almost-7, but I've taught high school and can appreciate what you're saying about your daughter. Our problems these days are still the easy ones-- my 2 year old locked the basement door this morning and I had to take the doorknob off to do laundry-- that sort of stuff!!

But welcome, and enjoy!!

Thanks Jessica!

Hi Alice, I will pass on your message. Here's a question. As an ex teacher how long do you reckon the essay shoulb be for a fifteen year old over a weekend? My wife tends to assign a set number of words.

Thanks

Hi Tim, I am Anne from New York State USA. We have a 14 yr old son and an 8 yr old daughter. Good kids, I wrote something in your thread about discipline. I agree with the essay --- gets them thinking and working.

Welcome. wavey.gif

Hi Ashleigh. Bet you've got your hands full!

Hi Anne. Glad you like the essay . Our daughter's godmother, a retired teacher, was the person who thought of it. She's even offered to set the essays and grade them to ensure they're done properly.

You can imagine what our daughter thinks about that!

My step-mom makes the kids do esays, and my mom made me do them a few times...

Hi Akbutterfly. Thanks for the welcome. We'll have to tell our dd she's not the only one who has to write an essay. She usually complains they're too long as well!

Hi Akbutterfly,

My wife normally assigns 1,500 words. Our daughter has to stay on topic and write neatly. Ten pages must have taken you a good few hours. LOL.

One of my wifes friends makes her daughter write out sentences.

HOw about making the grader's work easier and have her type it? It will improve her typing skills and make it much easier to grade.

Also, for topics, look at some of the essays kids have to write to get into college... you may as well give her some prep at that kind of thought process.

As to the number of words, I don't know. I taught math, so that was more the type of assignment I would give. (But my son has had to write a few letters of apology when he has gotten in trouble-- kind of the 6 year old level of what we're talking about.)

Hi Tim and all,

Kind of new here myself. I have a 13 year old daughter and two sons, 11 and 8.

I too am a High School English teacher. I would offer to help grade your daughter's essays but I am from Pennsylvania. We tend to have a twisted view of the English language over here biggrin.gif .

So is mine. Oddly, in this age of spellcheckers spelling is a lost art (it's not even in our curriculum at school). blush.gif

Hi,

Two of our daughter's friends, also both aged fifteen, came over. My wife jokingly asked them what their worst punishment was. An essay or sentences to be done over a weekend came first. Removal of phone/msn/or tv second. A normal grounding and extra chores third and forth.

Food for thought!
