its great but I don't understand why people get so uptight when they talk about all the benefits from breastfeeding blink.gif are you upset that you didn't? I just don't get it

I don't think they'll ever know all the positives from BF, and naturally it is better than artificial milk. That's not to say that feeding a baby formula is bad or wrong, but logically what is made to be used by nature is always going to be better that anything we can create.

interesting read.
I think regardless of what path we choose as woman we are doing as we see fit for our children.
there are pros and cons to both breastfeeding or formula as with any other thing.. Dont plan on more kids so this doesnt effect me. BTW the closest tie to heart problems is with gum disease and actually it's proven that smaller people are more at risk as well.
hence i can take or leave this subject. Not to mention breast milk nutirition is soley based on the mums intake, if she's doing coke or heroin then formula would obviously be better. so really it's about our choises as individuals.
IMO niether is better then the other.

Never underestimate the marketing power of baby formula manufacturers! They are the ones constantly brainwashing moms to be that formula is as good as, if not better than mother's milk (now with omega 3s!). It's hard to fight a multi-billion dollar machine...

Thats the truth! I just ditched 2 unopened cans of enfamil that came to my home, unsolicited, plus about $30 in coupons for formula to a formula feeding mom. How do they even know I had a baby?!?! growl.gif
Nice Try enfamil. Just because its free, doesn't mean I'm putting it in my baby. tongue.gif At least not until I absolutely have to. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Its going better this time than it did with the other 2!

I am all for breastfeeding, I think it's great. It provides everything the baby needs, with the health benefits.

But, I don't like the attitude surrounding breastfeeding vs. formula. Some women cannot breastfeed, some choose not to. And that is totally there choice. But I think that society has created an environment where formula feedings mothers feel looked down upon because they aren't breastfeeding.

A friend of mine had a baby this year and choose not to breastfeed more than a few times (for the colostrum). She really struggled because she felt like people would look at her as having made a bad choice.

If you choose to breastfeed, it is a good choice. But formula isn't that bad either. And I honestly have not seen any drastic differences between breastfed children and formula fed children - in fact, I haven't seen any noticable differences amongst my friends and my own children, some were breastfed, some weren't.

I think the trick is to be confident in the choices you make in your parenting. You have to do what you believe in your heart is best for you and your children, and when you do that , it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks.

I agree breastmilk is better than formula and I admit that i didnt try with Jenna. I was alone and had no support so i gave up way to easily! With Breanna i was so geared up to breastfeed. i had my SIL and MIL to be my support as they are what you call nazi breastfeeders...LOL. And she was taking to it good, not perfect but i knew it was a learning thing for both of us. BUT then i had the complications, and hemoraging 2 litres of blood in surgery. My OB/Surgeon said because of the amount of blood i lost and what my body went through i could stop lactating. And i pumped like crazy and had her to my breast to keep the flow and supply up but as the days went on the supply no matter what i did reduced and then boom i could not make nay at all. So i had to resort to it. yes breast milk is the best but no one should ( and im not saying you guys are im talking about people who havent been in the shoes of why a mom chose formula....) look down on a mom who formula feeds. yes the benfits outweight for sure BUT there are poeple who cant actually breastfeed for medical reasons.... sad.gif

my husband is the odd ball...he was breast fed up until 12 months and was solely on breast milk until he was at least 10 months before she even introduced solids. he has a TERRIBLE immune system! he can catch colds so easily and it knocks him on his butt for days. and even other illenesses. he is always sick. and more so being a teacher aide and now daddy. It has gotten better for sure but still an annyoance to him..He even got the mumps, measals, chicken pox, whopping cough as a baby as well I was forula fed from day one and i have an amazing immune system.... teh only time i get really sick or catch thinge asily is when im pregnant. I can be barfed on, pooped on, sneezed on, coughed on and i dont catch i. if i get the stomach bug i kick it within 24 hours a cold maby 3 days at the most...

What I get fed up with is why BFing moms always have to consider FF moms' feelings, because we might make them "feel bad". I'm sorry, but if a FFing mom is feeling guilty, that's her own problem for her choices she made, not the fault of BFing moms. It's NEVER the other way around; look at the heckling & complaining people do when BFing moms NIP! NO ONE EVER complains about a FFing mom feeding her child in public, EVER.

There's always an exception to everything, and it's tiring to hear the "I/mychild/someone I know off the streets was FF, and I'm/they're fine." How do you know? There's always other health &/or environmental factors involved. BFing provides the best start that our babies were meant to have to give them the best chances for survival, not something created in a laboratory out of very questionable ingredients.

Mollie, seriously, you find BF Nazi offensive? Why? Because you are commited to BF'ing your children and "giving them the best start"? And are you actually manufacturing the formula yourself to know the ingredients are questionable? What part of BF Nazi is offensive?

I am termed the sleep nazi, and very proud of it! tongue.gif

I won't even say if I BF or FF my kids, because clearly it doens't matter, and you would find something wrong with what someone else is doing. Clearly FF and BF kids are very very healthy!

You seem to get offended quite easily and I am not sure why. If you are so convinced that what you are doing for your children is right for them, then what is to be "offended" about?

And for the recrd, FF mom don't have guilt, not one single ounce of it, you are assuming this. Nobody cares if you BF or FF in public, you are assuming this as well........and if they do complain, who cares! Isn't that what a BF mom would say?

Normally I owuld apologize, but I am not oging to because you keeping leaving PC and coming back under a new username and jumping into a controversial post and "get offended". I don't understand.

I am not offended, far from it. I know I have given my kids the best possible start, and have no regrets over anything. Who do you think coined the term "BF Nazi" - it wasn't a BFer! A Nazi was someone who served under Hitler in Germany, incase you didn't know that.

I can read labels on cans - if you can't pronounce it, why would you feed it to your baby? I would never use commercial formula, yes, I would make my own if I had to after I sought out donations for breastmilk. I've never had to supplement, thank goodness.

the term nazi has been popularized by a sinefield (sp?) episode where there was a soup guy with strict rules on how his soup was ordered and served. meaning he was adimit it was done his way and right.
It's a term that can be offensive in its original context but now is so widely used..
just so you know why some dont find it offensive anymore.

But back on topic, i think we all have rights as woman to make the choices we see fit for each of our kids.
your supposed to be free to voice your opinion which is fine.
We all need to remember that we are not all the same, we cannot all do the same things. ( i cant breastfeed, even if i had wanted to.)
We have to be aware that this topic can hurt feelings and anger.
We are supposed to teach our children not to judge color or religion, why are then we allowed to judge each other for breastfeeding or formula feeding??
really it's food and in the end as long as you provide for your children the best way you can to sustain their lives then it doesnt matter how you do it.

Well, feeding a baby substandard food when she knows she has the best food right there(and for FREE!) should make a person reconsider their choice, especially when they know the benefits of breastfeeding. Read the labels - corn syrup solids would NOT be the primary ingredient in breastmilk. It seems to me like you seem to believe people who choose formula over breastfeeding do so because they don't want to deal with the time and hassle of breastfeeding. And I personally beleive that is a dangerous assumption to make - if you do not know the reasons why someone says no to breastfeeding, do not comment on it, unless you are willing to offend.

Anyway. Everyone accepts your opinion and your choices but you don't have to talk about it like it is the only way and the absolute right way. I hope your kids, in 50 years, are doing well. I am sure all the formula fed bubs will be doing just as well.

Zavier was a whole new ball game. I pumped for him, for about 6 months give or take. and then I quit. For multiple reasons that I don't feel the need to explain.

Mollie, not everyone has a choice. Maybe the woman you see with the formula had breast cancer and cant nurse. Maybe she was sexually abused and the thought of it gives her anxiety attacks. Maybe she has PPD. Maybe the child is adopted. Maybe she is a single mom and has to work full time to support her child. And yes, maybe she just doesn't want to. You can choose what to do with your kids, but you have no right to judge others on their choices. I am thankful formula was there when I wasn't able to provide milk for my baby. And yes, I think you should consider a FF moms feelings, even though her choice was different then yours. It's part of getting along with people. Understanding that people have different opinions and make different choices. You were very lucky to not have to supplement, not everyone is.

A lot of people have very passionate opinions about feeding babies. I prefer BFing but I've made it clear to all of my friends who have babies, that I'll support them in any way I can. I'd be happy to help with nursing questions and if they choose another route, I'll go help them find the best bottles for their baby.
I was a committed breast feeder, almost 4 solid years minus the last 3 mos of my second pregnancy, and I enjoyed most of it and I got personal satisfaction from saving my family money and becoming knowledgeable about it. I've had one baby who didn't grow well and who still has trouble with solids but was never sick, then the other who grew like a little pig but was sick all the time.

In the end, the fact is that breastmilk from a healthy mother, provides the best nutrition for a baby. That said, I was a FF baby and I think I'm pretty darn smart. rolling_smile.gif

Anyway. Everyone accepts your opinion

I for one can't say I accept your opinion - yes I am coming out of hiding because I believe that someone's opinion should never be an attack on someone else in any way shape or form....and honestly its too bad Mollie that you aren't able to behave (for lack of a better word) in conversations such as this because with your experience with BF I would think you have alot of knowledge to share with people.

Kinda like in Jerry McGuire - where "you had me at hello" - you "lost me at why BF moms always have to consider FF mom's feelings..." in the world you should ALWAYS consider other's feelings - maybe if more people did this on a regular basis this world would begin to right itself......

eta - I wasn't referring to Nina's opinion btw.... rolling_smile.gif

NO ONE EVER complains about a FFing mom feeding her child in public, EVER.

ok sorry.. i didnt mean to be offensuve...

And im nto saying you all have to consider thier feelings but just know that there are some moms that can not mediccly bf and doat time feel as if they are looked down by bfing moms. I tried and did breast feed breanna for 1 month but after my complicayions and almost dieing in surgery and losing 2 litres of blood my body stopped lacatating, no meds or pumping or breastfeeding would bring it back. There is a word for it , my ob told me and i cant think of it. But it does happen. and i havent even said anything about bf in piublic.. i am fone with it and dont care if they do.

Well, feeding a baby substandard food when she knows she has the best food right there(and for FREE!) should make a person reconsider their choice, especially when they know the benefits of breastfeeding. Formula isn't anywhere close to being "like" or "close to" breastmilk. There's no comparison, actually. The formula manufacturers can try, and with good marketing & advertising, they usually succeed in fooling people into thinking it's an OK thing to feed infants. Read the labels - corn syrup solids would NOT be the primary ingredient in breastmilk. They can't make any money off of breastfeeding, so they have to trick people into thinking it's hard to do, a PITA, and that their products are an acceptable substitute when it's not. And the benefits of breastfeeding last a lifetime. Check back in about 50 years & see which kids are doing better.

my husband is the odd ball...he was breast fed up until 12 months and was solely on breast milk until he was at least 10 months before she even introduced solids. he has a TERRIBLE immune system! he can catch colds so easily and it knocks him on his butt for days. and even other illenesses. he is always sick. and more so being a teacher aide and now daddy.

There's always an exception to everything, and it's tiring to hear the "I/mychild/someone I know off the streets was FF, and I'm/they're fine." How do you know? There's always other health &/or environmental factors involved. BFing provides the best start that our babies were meant to have to give them the best chances for survival, not something created in a laboratory out of very questionable ingredients.

i wasnt jumping on what you said i was just saying he was the odd ball out.. i was not insulting.... I guess im tired of people who bf make the moms that do have to ff no matter what they want or tried feel like they made teh wrong descion. and some mom dont have the descion. Thats what happened to me...

I've never had to supplement, thank goodness.

i was a bf'er with jordan.. thank you.. jenna no because i just didnt have the support... i gave up i admit my choice , breanna i did for 1 month but stopped because my body didnt allow me too

Was this question for me?

No, I don't use jarred baby food. I don't even make baby food. I let them eat what we ate, within reason. I wouldn't give a baby bacon or other tough meats or other choking hazards. I mushed it up some, but never processed it in a blender or something.

I thought we'd all matured some in this past year or so.

PS - I was born in Germany. I understand that Shelly's comment about it was lighthearted, in that she meant that she's had people on her side who were very adament about BF'ing, and were very helpful.. and I can understand that the term "nazi" in and of itself can be very offensive, like calling someone WASP, or Chink, or other derogatory terms for ethnicity, religion, culture etc... I don't think there was any offense meant, and I'm sorry some were offended.. can we now move on?

This post wasn't posted as a pro-bf vs pro-ff debate.. it was posted as an informative article. Read it, love it or hate it, and leave it.

I still stand by the not every woman is able to breast feed no matter what they
