for you painters, need segestions

Let me start with i am the worst drawer in the world. my drawings consist of lines and circles that is with people, animals anything that reflect reality.
I need some art for the condo we just bought and I wanted to make a lot of it myself. problem being i have no idea what supplies i need aside from the paint, brushes and canvases that I'm gonna need. I'm also not sure wither to do oil or acrylic and really what are the differences??
soo what do I need??
are there any tricks to painting that will make my picture look less then mya's art project?? (actually i shouldn't say that..she can draw and paint very well.)

If you decide to chicken out on the painting idea (I sympathize as I'm very art impaired, myself! ) I've seen some kick butt art done with framing fabric or wallpaper pieces on HGTV. I've seen it done in all sizes from sofa pieces to 3 or 4 framed sets.

Ditto. I had one large wall that needed something, but framed artwork that large would have cost a fortune. I went to the fabric store and picked out 6 different textures of fabric in the 3 main colors of my living room decor (apple green, cream and dark brown) then I just put the fabric in different szed embordery hoops & hung them on the wall in a big design. I probably had about 30 of them.

I know that Ikea sells square fabric stretchers online and they aren't terribly expensive if you decide to go that route.

I work at Michaels. Are you doing this on a canvas or the wall? If you're doing this on the wall, then I suggest the paint you get at Home Depot or a hardware store (I can't think of the name) but tempra paint/acrylic paints are used for projects like painting ceramics, wood, canvas, etc..
What about vinyl cut outs? You could put those on the wall, or you could paint around the design on the wall.
edit: Oil, tempra, and acrylic paints are for different textures and surfaces, like how watercolor paint is only used for specific papers and not canvas.
