ok so like the description says my son river has adhd and also some ocd. he's 8 and he's been on meds for this for the past few months he also sees a theripist once a month. now the meds do seem to help with his attention span. for example before he went on them he'd say be reading a book, he'd read a line or two and then start talking about or doing something completely unrelated to what he was reading. he'd also repeat lines or words over and over again (this is part of the ocd and he tends to do it when watching movies also.) he's gotten better with this since he started his meds and therepy. the problems i'm having though is his attitude. i mean his 8 and i swear it's like i'm dealing with a teenager already. i'll ask him a quetion or tell him to do something and i'll get "OK or i don't know type of response in that roll-your-eyes my mom is so stupid type of voice. mad.gif when i bring it to his attention that he's 'mouthing off' or being rude he'll get upset saying "no he wasn't all he did was answer me" UUGHH!! then it's an argument about rather he was rude or not to me. it's making me crazy.

Sounds relatively typical for an 8 year old (not including the adhd and ocd, of course).

Try not to take the short answers too personal. If he's doing what he's told and not being disrespectful i.e. "I don't have to listen to you" etc., then I think you've done as much as you can do. No reason to try and force specific answers, responses.

As far as the ADHD and OCD, have you eliminated every source of sugar from his diet? I'm no doctor but am curios what a total sugar elimination diet would result in with regard to his issues.

Sugar elimination would be mean all sources of sugar- candy, soda etc PLUS all carbohydrates including breads and grains- which break down into sugars.

He would essentially be on an atkins diet.

as far as eliminating every sugar no. but he doesn't drink a lot of sodas and we generally don't keep a bunch of sugary foods around.

Might be worth a shot..... It would be interesting to see if you could get him off meds this way.

Try processed sugar first. So no (zero) soda. Just water. No gatorade, no juice etc. Fruit is fine. No candy, no sugary cereal etc.

Then start to eliminate the carbohydrates. Reduce chips, pasta etc.

He'll hate you at first but in the end it might turn out better. smile.gif

In a dog training class I took, they had puppies who were totally unruly and crazy. Normal puppy behavior, right? Well, they took these puppies off grain-filled dog food and their craziness all but disappeared.

The theory is that the grains - with their high glycemic index- caused a sugar rush of sorts in the puppies.
