Ashley has a friend that isn't very nice to her. I've always just left things up to Ashley, but lately I've noticed that this girl is pretty snotty to Ashley. Ashley tried to share some good news and the girl just said, "you are only trying to make me jealous" when Ashley was just excited and wanted to share the good news with her friend. Ashley is always supportive of this girl when she has something exciting to share. This girl is constantly telling Ashley "do this", "don't say that", and only plays with Ashley if she gets her way and Ashley plays what this girl wants to play. Ashley is pretty laid back and it doesn't seem to bother her. But, it bugs me. I said something to Ashley about what this girl said one time and Ashley defended the girl saying that she didn't mean it that way. Should I just stay out of it and let Ashley work it out on her own? The thing is, I don't think Ashley will ever say anything. But, I just don't want Ashley to be a pushover all the time. Maybe I should just limit her time with this girl. I don't think it's a very positive environment but yet I can't create her environment for her all her life so she needs to learn to stick up for herself, right?

I think you should let Ashley handle it. She seems to be very put together for her age and i think will hit a point where she will say on her own to this girl what her comments make her feel like. Or she will get sick of it and say " i don't want to be your friend if you cant play nice".

Corey has a friend like this, and we talk A LOT about her behavior. I always remind her about what qualities a real friend has, versus the way this kid behaves, and sometimes she sees the situation more clearly than at other times. I would not intervene actively--ita with the others that she is a smart kid with high self esteem and will in the end make smart choices about friendships. It's hard to watch them struggle socially, but they have to figure these things out by experience as much as if not more than by listening to our advice.

Our girls are like sisters! They may tell each other like it is, and they may not always agree, but they would never intentionally be mean and hurtful to one another. They love each other!
