I make DH clean his outside for this very reason. He will even show me that it's empty (and believe me, I always double check even after he tells me to make sure). You can't be too careful.
Growing up my stepfather had a gun out and my mother told him to put it way. He told her it was empty and she said she didn't care and he said, "look!" and shot above her head and a bullet hit the wall over her! He had no clue there was still a round in it and thank God he didn't try to prove his point by aiming it at her. I'm sure this father feels horribe. What a tragic story. -------------------- |

Very sad. And I feel bad for them.
However the first thing you do when you go to clean a gun is check for bullets. Its common sense. You NEVER expect it to be empty. You always check. Always. And I feel bad for the family I am sure the father is having a hard time with this. |

I have never owned a gun and have no clue how to clean it and I'm sure I would be so nervous that I'd check a million times for an extra bullet before I did, but he has to feel so horrible. I'm not blaming him I just think it's one of those wrong place wrong time things.

I agree, I am not blamming the father, I am sure it was accident. I am sure he feels horrible now. |

I don't think guns should be near children PERIOD...Always go far away from the house even if you have double checked. I say this because like Crystal's stepdad my father was cleaning an "empty" gun once and it went off and went through the wall and they found the bullet right next to wear my head would have been if I was in my crib that night...very scary.

The only thing I know about guns is to ALWAYS assume they are loaded and handle them accordingly. My veteran father taught us that from very early on even though we did not have them in the house. That poor father and family . . .
