i saw on the news today that consumer reports did a test on a large number of infant car seats and only two passed the test.
it said to go to consumerreports.org to get a list.

I know one that failed was an evenflo discovery.

I was shocked that they only test car seats at a speed of 35 mph. I mean lots of us drive on highways, so are no car seats really safe at a higher speed of impact?
car seats that failed for sure were:

even flo discovery
graco safe seat
britax companion

I used the peg perego and my carseat was recalled too. I am so glad we were not using it, but we were going to use it for the new baby....

I have to say that I have never been happy with the bases. I think they should be pitched and just secure them with that slot for the belt. KWIM? If they are going to be thrown because of the bases then the bases must go!

I find it amuzing that one of the priciest seats failed. Glad to see some reasonable ones that are made well!

Yes, I just saw this on the Today Show. My Peg was on the list. sad.gif Wesley is out of it now, but I gave it to a friend to borrow....I will let her know.

I must say though...when I bought our Peg, it was at the TOP of Consumer Reports. It was expensive, but I thought I was getting the best at the time.

Don't be too hard on yourself! It wasn't at the bottom of the list! Do you remember the death traps we had for car seats? If they even existed? And we are still here to talk about it.

Just a point of clarification so no one panics unnecessarily~NO seats are currently recalled as a result of these tests. The NHTSA is the "testing /certification/recall body" for US issued and approved car seats not Consumer Reports. They(CR) conducted individual tests and published the results. According to their test, the seats that passed their tests were the Graco SnugRide with EPS foam and the Baby Trend Flex Loc.

That being said, I hope the NHSTA evaluates the validity of the CR tests and issues a statement. The results were downright scary to read.

Hold up. Now this is contradicting. The Snugride is on that recalls link, but when I go to consumer reports it says they recommend it. Now I'm scratching my head. Is the recalls link up to date, because it lists 2003 as the manufacturing date? Perhaps it is the older ones they are talking about.

I am going to sound so stupid, but what does EPS stand for? I know I will kick myself once you tell me. I just can't think of it right now.

Ok, I looked it up. It says: EPS™ foam for luxurious comfort . What does the comfort have to do with the safety?

EPS is the same foam that lines bike helmets. It is a shock absorbing foam. Actually, it's hard (Britax has used it for years in their seats) not cushy.

Hmm..so I wonder if all snugrides have eps or what?!?! I'm gonna have to do some research on this! I never saw a difference in advertisement on Graco's behalf when I was looking for a carseat for her..and trust me I did plenty of looking!

I'm not sure. But the recall page said the ones recalled were made in the year 2003. I would think any on the shelves now would have been made recently. I just bought ours a week ago. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know.
