The girls had dentist visits last week and the dentist told me that Megan's teeth have moved dramatically (I can't really tell, lol) and her overbite is terrible. We sorta knew this because she has "forward tongue thrust movement" and has since a baby and that will make the bite terrible. Also, she sucks her thumb STILL which doesn't help. He said her bottom teeth are starting to get loose and he doesn't want her sucking her thumb after her permanent teeth come in. Her 6 year molars are almost all the way in as it is now. SO....he gave her ONE month to stop sucking her thumb or we are forced to go see our orthodontist to have a "device" put in her mouth. That didn't make Megan NOR me very happy. Obvious why it didn't make Megan happy but for me it is the expense. You only get so much $ from insurance for lifetime benefit on orthodontic care and I didn't want to start at age 5 for some device. It's a "fork" like device, same as what Ryan had to have put in as a kid . It's apparently not a pleasant thing to have put in or to have in so the dentist sorta put the fear in her about quitting and I definitely put the fear in her about it. I felt terrible putting so much fear in her over this, but in the end it's for her own good. I'm a "when you are ready you'll do it" kinda gal with just about everything, but with this.......I'm not. The dentist recommended putting a sock on her hand and duct-taping it. We've tried the stuff you put on the thumb, etc and nothing ever worked. So the first night she begged me not to put the sock on there, so I put gloved on her hands. Well, I went in there later in the night and she had the gloves off and was sucking her thumb. Before that Ryan said he went in there and she was sucking her thumb with the glove ON. Ewww!!!

So the next night I threatened the sock and duct-tape and she convinced me not and she was sucking her thumb again. Since then I've not seen her suck it at all, but obviously I'm not in her room all night, so not for sure. It's not in her mouth when I check on her and not in morning. So we'll see. I'm proud of her for doing as well as she has because she's a big-time thumb sucker both day and night. With her SPD it's also harder for her to give up something so routine for her so this is a huge deal.
