Anyone with experience with Hooked on Phonics?

I've been considering a Hooked on Phonics set for Olivia (6.5). They have one at Big Lots for $50. She has lots of sight words but really hates to sound out words. I was the exact same way as a kid~relied on my good memory and got frustrated with the "slowness" of sounding out words! I'm trying to figure out how to make it more fun, less frustrating.

Have you used it? Did you like it? How did your child respond to it?

Our local library has the program. You might want to see if yours has it before you spend the money.

I tried it and it wasn't as amazing as all the stories you hear. JMHO.

I was going to recently post a similar conversation but ended up going ahead and buying it online because I saw a great deal.

I have the Kindergarten-2nd grade editions for Aliyah and she's doing pretty well so far. She's in kindergarten right now and many of her peers can read at the first grade level already. I'm concerned she's going to be behind or feel out of place, so I wanted to get her started on things. She's about two months into it and has really developed a sense of sounding out words and spelling them through the Hooked on Phonics system. Currently, in addition to the material provided with the set, she's reading the Dick and Jane series plus some early reader books independantly.

The thing that's cool about Hooked on Phonics is that they include a couple of different mediums to learn- a workbook, audio CD's, a computer game CD and of course, the story books. Alli especially loves the sticker chart that comes along with it- they can chart their progress on it. The books are in two sections- the numbered series, you follow in order and then what they call "Hop books" that are kind of "review" type stories- including the sounds/words/etc. that have just been learned. Everything coordinates with the workbook. The w-book also includes games entertwined within the practice pages. The only thing I don't like is that the lessons are a bit long. Often times, she gets frustrated or loses patience with the length of the lessons, so I typically go about 20 minutes with it and then put it away for the next time. Due to this, we're getting through the kit a bit slowly but that's ok.

I'd really recommend it. Frankly, I wish I had purchased it for Ryan. It's definitely something I'll keep around and start Mason on when the time comes.
