Summer Activites

Summer is coming! I am planning for an educational summer activities for my kids. Though, they are still at school but I want them to continue their learning process. I have here children's books, movies, and Can you share your idea with me?

We just do natural extensions of what she likes when she is not in school. Olivia loves walking so we take a walk every day. We point out the differences in the things by season, by amount of growth, color, etc. Sometimes she wants to know how something happens and it sparks a natural learning experience. If we are going on vacation, we get books about our destination ahead of time and find things to do. We've found if she's more involved in the process, things are more interesting to her than if we "plan and go" with her in tow. We've made books of photos she took depicting each letter in the alphabet. We build things out of boxes or anything else we can find to see what new things we can come up with. In the summer we are usually in the pool, park & sandbox exercising our muscles as well as our mind. She always helps with meal prep and likes cooking and gets extra math skills this way. We just pick up on the things she likes and go with it!

I try to do as much outdoor activities as possible but also try to keep them occupied with some indoor learning activities, coloring pages, crafts etc. so that they don't forget the skill they learned in Kindergarten. I find many ideas and resources on my favorite websites.

Art museums, childrens museums, the zoo, natural history museums, outdoor hikes or nature centers, indoor gym places like My Gym or Gymboree, skating rink, indoor or outdoor swimming pools, sports like soccer or t-ball, karate at the YMCA, art classes, music classes like kindermusik, kite flying, fishing at a nearby stream, bowling, miniature golf, bounce houses, crafts (make your own or go to one of those places where you paint pottery). There is so much out there!!! I pickup any type of local parent guide and scan through their calendar of events. The local Y has a lot of activities or just your local parks & recs. Check them out!

In the summer, besides the swimming and beach and all that, we like to do lots outside! So much of it can be made educational too. Some of the "learning" based activities in summer the kids and I like best are nature walks, trips to the planetarium, trash clean-ups in the park, outdoor art, cooking, local community resource visits, etc.

Like others said, we tend to pick up on what the kids like/show an interest in and run with it!

I dont know where you're from but I always enjoyed exploring the woods with my dad and brothers. It was fun to just sit around and watch the animals, swim in the streams and just take in the awesome scenery.
