I don't think they'll ever know all the positives from BF, and naturally it is better than artificial milk. That's not to say that feeding a baby formula is bad or wrong, but logically what is made to be used by nature is always going to be better that anything we can create.

interesting read.
I think regardless of what path we choose as woman we are doing as we see fit for our children.
there are pros and cons to both breastfeeding or formula as with any other thing.. Dont plan on more kids so this doesnt effect me. BTW the closest tie to heart problems is with gum disease and actually it's proven that smaller people are more at risk as well.
hence i can take or leave this subject. Not to mention breast milk nutirition is soley based on the mums intake, if she's doing coke or heroin then formula would obviously be better. so really it's about our choises as individuals.
IMO niether is better then the other.

Never underestimate the marketing power of baby formula manufacturers! They are the ones constantly brainwashing moms to be that formula is as good as, if not better than mother's milk (now with omega 3s!). It's hard to fight a multi-billion dollar machine...

Thats the truth! I just ditched 2 unopened cans of enfamil that came to my home, unsolicited, plus about $30 in coupons for formula to a formula feeding mom. How do they even know I had a baby?!?! growl.gif
Nice Try enfamil. Just because its free, doesn't mean I'm putting it in my baby. tongue.gif At least not until I absolutely have to. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Its going better this time than it did with the other 2!

I am all for breastfeeding, I think it's great. It provides everything the baby needs, with the health benefits.

But, I don't like the attitude surrounding breastfeeding vs. formula. Some women cannot breastfeed, some choose not to. And that is totally there choice. But I think that society has created an environment where formula feedings mothers feel looked down upon because they aren't breastfeeding.

A friend of mine had a baby this year and choose not to breastfeed more than a few times (for the colostrum). She really struggled because she felt like people would look at her as having made a bad choice.

If you choose to breastfeed, it is a good choice. But formula isn't that bad either. And I honestly have not seen any drastic differences between breastfed children and formula fed children - in fact, I haven't seen any noticable differences amongst my friends and my own children, some were breastfed, some weren't.

I think the trick is to be confident in the choices you make in your parenting. You have to do what you believe in your heart is best for you and your children, and when you do that , it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks.

Well, feeding a baby substandard food when she knows she has the best food right there(and for FREE!) should make a person reconsider their choice, especially when they know the benefits of breastfeeding. Formula isn't anywhere close to being "like" or "close to" breastmilk. There's no comparison, actually. The formula manufacturers can try, and with good marketing & advertising, they usually succeed in fooling people into thinking it's an OK thing to feed infants. Read the labels - corn syrup solids would NOT be the primary ingredient in breastmilk. They can't make any money off of breastfeeding, so they have to trick people into thinking it's hard to do, a PITA, and that their products are an acceptable substitute when it's not. And the benefits of breastfeeding last a lifetime. Check back in about 50 years & see which kids are doing better.

I agree breastmilk is better than formula and I admit that i didnt try with Jenna. I was alone and had no support so i gave up way to easily! With Breanna i was so geared up to breastfeed. i had my SIL and MIL to be my support as they are what you call nazi breastfeeders...LOL. And she was taking to it good, not perfect but i knew it was a learning thing for both of us. BUT then i had the complications, and hemoraging 2 litres of blood in surgery. My OB/Surgeon said because of the amount of blood i lost and what my body went through i could stop lactating. And i pumped like crazy and had her to my breast to keep the flow and supply up but as the days went on the supply no matter what i did reduced and then boom i could not make nay at all. So i had to resort to it. yes breast milk is the best but no one should ( and im not saying you guys are im talking about people who havent been in the shoes of why a mom chose formula....) look down on a mom who formula feeds. yes the benfits outweight for sure BUT there are poeple who cant actually breastfeed for medical reasons.... sad.gif

It's NEVER the other way around; look at the heckling & complaining people do when BFing moms NIP! NO ONE EVER complains about a FFing mom feeding her child in public, EVER.

There's always an exception to everything, and it's tiring to hear the "I/mychild/someone I know off the streets was FF, and I'm/they're fine." How do you know? There's always other health &/or environmental factors involved. BFing provides the best start that our babies were meant to have to give them the best chances for survival, not something created in a laboratory out of very questionable ingredients.

Mollie, seriously, you find BF Nazi offensive? Why? Because you are commited to BF'ing your children and "giving them the best start"? And are you actually manufacturing the formula yourself to know the ingredients are questionable? What part of BF Nazi is offensive?

I am termed the sleep nazi, and very proud of it! tongue.gif

I won't even say if I BF or FF my kids, because clearly it doens't matter, and you would find something wrong with what someone else is doing. Clearly FF and BF kids are very very healthy!

You seem to get offended quite easily and I am not sure why. If you are so convinced that what you are doing for your children is right for them, then what is to be "offended" about?

And for the recrd, FF mom don't have guilt, not one single ounce of it, you are assuming this. Nobody cares if you BF or FF in public, you are assuming this as well........and if they do complain, who cares! Isn't that what a BF mom would say?

Normally I owuld apologize, but I am not oging to because you keeping leaving PC and coming back under a new username and jumping into a controversial post and "get offended". I don't understand.

I am not offended, far from it. I know I have given my kids the best possible start, and have no regrets over anything. Who do you think coined the term "BF Nazi" - it wasn't a BFer! A Nazi was someone who served under Hitler in Germany, incase you didn't know that.

I can read labels on cans - if you can't pronounce it, why would you feed it to your baby? I would never use commercial formula, yes, I would make my own if I had to after I sought out donations for breastmilk. I've never had to supplement, thank goodness.

You said you were offended by the term Nazi - and yes I am WELL AWARE of what it means and what it is. Why do you always ttwist your words - you clearly said "the term offends me"
I can't continue this conversation Mollie. mad.gif

You and your opinions are way to strong for me

the term nazi has been popularized by a sinefield (sp?) episode where there was a soup guy with strict rules on how his soup was ordered and served. meaning he was adimit it was done his way and right.
It's a term that can be offensive in its original context but now is so widely used..
just so you know why some dont find it offensive anymore.

But back on topic, i think we all have rights as woman to make the choices we see fit for each of our kids.
your supposed to be free to voice your opinion which is fine.
We all need to remember that we are not all the same, we cannot all do the same things. ( i cant breastfeed, even if i had wanted to.)
We have to be aware that this topic can hurt feelings and anger.
We are supposed to teach our children not to judge color or religion, why are then we allowed to judge each other for breastfeeding or formula feeding??
really it's food and in the end as long as you provide for your children the best way you can to sustain their lives then it doesnt matter how you do it.

It seems to me like you seem to believe people who choose formula over breastfeeding do so because they don't want to deal with the time and hassle of breastfeeding. And I personally beleive that is a dangerous assumption to make - if you do not know the reasons why someone says no to breastfeeding, do not comment on it, unless you are willing to offend.

Anyway. Everyone accepts your opinion and your choices but you don't have to talk about it like it is the only way and the absolute right way. I hope your kids, in 50 years, are doing well. I am sure all the formula fed bubs will be doing just as well.
