Anyone own a heart rate monitor

Do you have any suggestions, etc. I'm pretty clueless about them, but I really need to buy one. It's strongly suggested in most of the classes I take. They do sell them at the gym (Polar) and I found some on Ebay that are less expensive, but if there is a cheaper brand I wouldn't mind going with that. I really don't need all the bells and whistles. TIA!
