Parenting Club Forums > Breastfeeding > Infant fussy 10 min. every time BEFORE latch

Hi! My infant is 12 days old and has a problem that's very annoying. Since he was 3 days old, whenever he's hungry, I position him for feeding, but he fusses right before breastfeeding for 5-10 minutes - he sucka a few bites then pulls off & fusses & cries, and repeats until he finally latches. This happens regardless of time of day, which breast... basically he does this EVERY time! His poop is fine - normally yellow and a little seedy. Once he latches, he feeds fine. Any ideas?

(Normally I breastfeed sitting at 90 degree angle. Also, usually when he breastfeeds, the other nipple is drips milk for several minutes so I know my milk is flowing well.)

My guess is maybe you're a little over full at first and he can't get latched on because of that, so it takes him a few tries. It sounds pretty much how my son was those first few days, and that's what the problem was for me. Pumping an ounce or two (I just had an Avent hand pump that worked great for pumping small amounts) before trying to feed him solved the problem. If you don't have a pump, you can just squeeze some out yourself onto a towel or in the sink before feeding him. Good luck and congratulations! wub.gif thumb.gif

FYI all - I've been experimenting and one thing that helps is I feed him as soon as he's up, before he's fully awake... doing this makes him latch nearly instantly w/o the fussiness! Thank the Lord!

Sounds like his is just impatient, wants the milk NOW! Hopefully he'll figure out soon that if he just gets to eating he'll be happy!!
