ok, so most of you know the issues I have had with jake, and the ped. felt that a lot of the aversions were due to the fact that he was not introduced to anything other then breast feeding for the first year. so he instructed me, that he didnt care what i put in the bottle, but he wanted me to use a paci and a bottle by the time he was 6 weeks old.
we are coming up to that point now, and i have tried a few paci's and he isnt interested. i just ordered a soothie, which is supposed to be like what the hosp gives you..but i am not using bottles. i wondered what is the best paci for breast fed babies, and how can i avoid nipple confusion? andrew is a great nurser, and we have never had any issues from day one..i dont want to start now. has anyone used the soothies? -------------------- Stacy, wife to Peter, mom to Caleb, Jakob, and Andrew

Lots of babies have trouble taking a paci at first. My 2nd wouldn't take one until she was 5 months (now we can't get the darn thing away from her!!) We had to try several different ones before we could get her to take one, and both of mine ended up liking the Nuk (and were bf for 2 years each).

MAM is the recommended pacifier brand for breastfed babies. I remember the lactation consultant telling me that the particular pacifiers our hospital had were the worst for BF babies---they were the green all one piece design.

We were given soothies because we breasfed .. We LOVED THEM there was no confusion for her.
I wouldn't recommend any pacifier/ bottle that isn't a nipple type shape. -------------------- Jessica

I just ordered two soothies and some that advent has. but i am still not going to use a bottle. I just dont see the point of pumping and trying that.. but a paci would give us some time apart and my dh could take him for a while then. also the bennefits of decreased sids they say. -------------------- Stacy, wife to Peter, mom to Caleb, Jakob, and Andrew

After a month there should be a lot lower risk of nipple confusion.(If I remeber corretly, thats how long they told me to wait.) Dakota never took a paci and two friends of mine that just had babies said their babies wont either. Dakota started with the bottle at about 4 weeks so I could go back to work and we used to NUK nipples. They were the only ones she'd eat from. I hate it when you disagree with your dr. I cant stand Dakotas, I can't understand her (which makes me feel bad, shes a nice indian lady) but she arugued with me about her birthmark telling me it was a bite!! Good luck and do whatever you feel is best.

I could never get Erin to take a paci and i tried many including the soothie. Jake would not take one until he was 4 months old and then we could not get it out of his mouth for 2 years. Little stinkers have minds of their own!!

This is what I've heard also. Have someone else give the bottle and you be out of the house. Babies can smell breastmilk and why take a bottle if you can hold out for the real thing. I bf all 3 of my children and none of them used a paci. At 6weeks, you should be your babies paci so more milk is made to keep up with a growing baby. I can see the bottle idea, but I don't agree with the paci. Never heard of that. Most people say get the paci away so they don't get tooth problems. Can you see a lactation consultant? Or maybe call your local leleche group? Real life BTDT moms would be a great asset to you! |

I'm curious, why would he tell you to have your child take a paci? Most peds discourage using them unless your child has a strong sucking sensation. Both of mine did, I took Hanna's paci away at 10 months old because it absolutely drove me crazy, she'd cry 5-6 times a night once she realized it fell out of her mouth. Aubrey is starting to do that now too, she's only 5 months old. If my kids didn't have sucking sensations I would have never ever given them a paci I hate those things. Aubrey takes Advent paci's. The best bottle for BF babies is Advent as well. I'd encourage you to use the bottle more, after 4 weeks. They normally won't get nipple confusion after 4 weeks of age especially with the Advent bottles, they are the best. They are most like the mother's nipple. I mean wouldn't you want to be able to pump some at all, so that you coudl get away for a little while and allow someone else to feed her, it's good for daddy to do I think I commend you for wanting to solely BF but it's a chance for dad to bond too, just pump enough for 1-2 bottles a day even.

I just want to add...seriously I would honestly not give them a paci unless they are wanting to eat every 30 minutes or suck rather....I mean like others have said, once they get on them it's so hard to get them off of them. I loathe loathe loathe those things. After 4-5 months of age it's no longer a sensation they need to relieve it's a habit, almost a comfort. I'd rather a stuffed animal, blanket, or myself or DH be their comfort. I plan on breaking Aubrey of the habit at 6 months. The sooner the better because the less time it takes.

I do not want to pump if at all possible. With my last child, I pumped and fed him on demand and by the time I was done, it seems thats all I did either pumped or fed someone. and I ended up producing enough milk to feed a third world country! no kidding either, my boobs were the size of water melons, seperately!
I think he recommended the paci, because I was so resistive to using a bottle, and my middle son had terrible feeding aversions, due to the fact that he had been strictly breast fed,so when an emergency happened, and he was failure to thrive and needed to be supplemented he refused to be, since the bottle or plastic nipples were so foreign to him. I have considered for a brief moment letting dh give him a few sips of water a day from a bottle just to have him experience a bottle, but I am afraid he might decide he likes that better and stop breast feeding. so I decided on the paci instead. I dont know if he has a strong need to suck, but he doesnt seem to be able to pass gas and move his bowels well with out sucking. I have read that is normal. He has terrible gas issues, and gets belly pain. we try exercising his legs but that doesnt help. dh takes the baby at night after I feed him, and sometimes I think I could get a little rest if we had the paci to offer him to. just thoughts. -------------------- Stacy, wife to Peter, mom to Caleb, Jakob, and Andrew

Now see I had not heard this..hmmm interesting. Well in that case I'd say go on with the paci, I still hate them, but that is comforting. I will still break her from it at 6 months though. Oh I understand about the bottle. I give Aubrey water a couple times a week because they actually say it helps FF babies bowels move easier, I know she usually goes #2 a short while after drinking the water, may be coincidence but hey. I only BF her for 4 weeks due to some issues. They say BF babies actually should have some water after 4-5 weeks of age for flouride, isn't that right. Karen or someone would know better than I, but that is what I read in my book from the hospital. That would be a good idea even if you could do that, let him give him some water once a day in a bottle. Go in the other room when he does like someone else said so that he doesn't smell the BM. -------------------- LeaAnn, wife to Brian (05/21/2005)
