Ugh. Why do some peds make you feel that it's always your fault! I just got back from taking both boys in. Wesley has an ear infection and Wil has a sinus infection. We didn't see our regular ped and I'll never go back to this one if I can help it. She asked if Wesley was eating okay. I told her he wasn't nursing that well because of his cold. She asked about solids and I said that we are BF exclusively and that I have tried a bit of solids, he just won't take it. This is what she said "well it's really late to not be on solids. He should be on solids by now. You need to keep trying". I told her that I AM trying. And she just kept telling me that it was late. I said, okay...well then tell me some tricks to get him to eat more solids. She suggested to thin the food out, which I've tried. And she just kept repeating "YOU need to try more"...AS IF I HAVEN'T BEEN TRYING LADY!!!! My mom is totally the same way about all of this! So then this ped said that some kids have to see a food specialist at the hospital if they have problems eating solids. That was it. No encouragement or "good job" about BF. Never will I see her again.
I setup his 9 month checkup with the LC/pediatrician so that I can get HER advice instead. So we will see what she says next month. He has gained about a pound since last month, so I think he's fine...but the whole lack of vitamin thing came up again (from the stupid ped). -------------------- Rae SAHM to Wil (4) and Wesley (2) ~ Wife to Richard 10/20/01

Annika didn't really start eating solids till she was almost 9 months old. My pedi wasn't too concerned about it because she was gaining just fine.

Kylie wouldn't even touch solids except cheerios, things like that til she was well over a year old. She wasn't fully eating lots of solids til 18 months. Megan was very similar.
I say ignore the PED. Your child will be ready to eat when he's ready. -------------------- ~*Karen*~

Thanks to both of you! That makes me feel a lot better, because your girls all look super healthy. The kid is still at like the 50%, so I don't see what the problem is. My mom is visiting in a couple weeks and I'm happy that she can finally see for herself that it's not just me "not trying hard enough"! Grrrrrr

My son wasnt eating solids till after one yr either, although we did see an occupational therapist for help, but in the long run, all that she suggested was things that we are doing, that you are doing, and it was just the "keep trying" and one day he just started to eat.
I know you mentioned the "vitamin thing" and my ped was the same way, at first and then he did some blood tests that tested the amount of vits. in him and he was super! so even though they think they are not getting enough, they are, jake has never taken a supplement. and he was breast fed till he was 13 months old. i hope your next appt goes better. -------------------- Stacy, wife to Peter, mom to Caleb, Jakob, and Andrew

Don't worry about what she says, it's only her opinion Besides you know him best and know what is the best thing to do for him and since he's healthy then you're doing a great job and that's all that matters!

Oh Gosh Rae, don't listen to the Witch (for lack of better word that can appear in place of it ).
Anthony was off the charts since he was probably around 6 months or so, and he ate solids, so explain that one. You're doing a great job, and there's no need to rush it. If he's not ready then he's not ready. As long as he's meeting his milestones he'll be fine. And my goodness he looks like a healthy chunky little monkey to me. On a side note, I can't believe the lack of support, knowledge, and information for and from doctors on bf issue. Time to get educated. -------------------- |

I wouldn't worry about pushing the solids. The only reason they want babies on solids at 6 months is to learn to use there mouth and how to chew. They don't need the solids that early. My old pedi both his kids didn't eat solids til 12 months and were exlusively BF til 12 months.
I tried solids with Eliana at 6 months (then at 8 & 10mos). Didn't work so stopped. Well Eliana had food aversion issues. She started eating basic solids at 16 months. Keep up the great work! how old is he and how much does he weigh and height? -------------------- |

Thanks you all for bringing this post back up...Because it's starting to weigh on me, no pun intended. But I'm starting to worry more about the "using his mouth" issue. I brought it up to Wil's speech therapist and she said that Wesley should probably be tested by an OT, so we're actually going in tomorrow for both kids. I am still trying to give him solids, just because it's the type of person I am to "just keep trying". Lol. He takes a little here and there and he gums those wagon wheel puff things from Gerber. I do believe that some kids can have problems speaking if they have problems using their tongue/mouth/jaw, etc. So I'm trying to give him a little workout, besides the one he gets with BF alone. I'm not really worried about his weight, but like I said, I'm worried there may be an issue with his mouth or the fact I was taking an antidep while BF. Anyhow, he weighs about 18 lbs and....hmmm...I'm not sure how long he is, but he is LONG! He will be 9 months on the 20th and is already in 12 month clothes. -------------------- Rae SAHM to Wil (4) and Wesley (2) ~ Wife to Richard 10/20/01
