I am determined to breast feed this baby. I have the support of Marcus, his sister because she breast fed both babies and is so for it. and i have marcus's mom to help if i need it as well. As for consultants and such. I gave up with jenna to fast and i am determined not too this time around. I was wondering what are good breast pumps out there that you recommend? There will be a time where i need to go grocery shopping and leave the baby with marcus for a couple hours so i would like some pumped into a bottle for him just in case the baby gets hungry while im gone....

Medela.
If you have craigslist where you are, find a used one. You can typically buy one and then resell it for what you paid. -------------------- Convincing the world that the only way to solve the ongoing issues while raising children is PERSISTENCE. I would go with a Medela as well, but I disagree with DvFlyer on getting a used one. A Medela is not a "closed-system" and therefore it is possible and Medela would even tell you the same thing that germs, diseases, etc could be transmitted via a used one. I know some don't agree, and that's fine, but for me I wouldn't take that chance over ~$200. Now if you know someone personally that has one you can use and you trust them, that is fine IMO. -------------------- ~*Karen*~

Medela is the BEST PUMP on the market. If you are OK with using a used pump Craigslist is a great place to get them.
The great thing about Medela pumps when buying used is you can purchase new tubing and shields, so the pump is pretty much new to you!! The motor would be the only used part and it is relatively cheap. I have a Medela Pump In Style Double Electric Pump Backpack it cost me about $245 I purchased it from my hospital lactation consultant! -------------------- Jessica

I agree with you.. but what parts of the system would be of concern that couldn't be sterilized or replaced? -------------------- Convincing the world that the only way to solve the ongoing issues while raising children is PERSISTENCE. Well yeah, you can buy new tubes, flaps, horns, etc and those are ok, and most people do that but they don't replace the motor and milk CAN back up in the tubes into the motor. So you'd have to replace the motor as well. Then what's the point? -------------------- ~*Karen*~

It can make it to the motor? Not that I would be concerned (nor was my wife, fwiw - since i'm a guy, I thought I should mention that. ), but I thought that large white diaphragm protected the motor from liquid intrusion as well as serving as the pump.... ?
Or is that your point? i.e. there is a chance moisture can get passed the diaphragm? -------------------- Convincing the world that the only way to solve the ongoing issues while raising children is PERSISTENCE. I have an Avent ISIS manual pump and I love it. My friend has one also and she said it works better than some of the automatic pumps that she has tried.

Absolutely, Medela PIS. I had two of them; first I bought new and then when Erin came along a friend had one that she gave me. I did replace the tubes because it had been many years since she had used it, but it went through her two kids then 5 years later I used it for Erin and it has been passed on to someone else.

I loved my PIS but I would not buy a used one. They are very firm in telling you that it is a one user product. I cringe every time I see a used one for sale.

ok I'm totally in love with Medela BUT my sister in law LOVES her playtext breast pump it works great (she uses it twice a day at least) it has helped with her supply and and its comfortable and fast and closer to the price of a swing medela which is only one, and I LOVED my swing but it would have been SOOO much better if I could have had a double pump.

I was able to get a medela lactina select (a rental pump that can have multiple users) on craigslist for $250. I love that pump.

I used this one and it was awesome. I did get it used because it stated that it was the only breastpump that was safe have multiple users. I just bought all the new tubing. -------------------- Brianne

ITA!!! I had both the Medela PIS and the Isis for when I was in airport bathrooms for business travel and didn't have an outlet, and tbh, the Isis was better. Coupled with the fact that it was around $40 versus the $200 for the PIS, and imo, it's a no-brainer. -------------------- Jeanne

I had a Medela PIS and loved it, even though I could not BF very long...but it wasn't because of the pump. The pump worked great!
I used mine for only 1 week and resold it used on Craigslist. I paid a little over $200 for it and only asked $100 for it. If you are going to pay full price, I would not buy a used one when you can get a new one for the same $$$. I personally see nothing wrong with buying one used, as long as you know the person didn't have any kinds of diseases and such. If I bought used I probably would only buy one from someone I knew personally. -------------------- Jennie: mommy to two handsome little men, a crazy husband (TheOaf66), and two cats.

I used one at the hospital for months, the "green machine" i called it. it was awsome. if you check with you LC they might have hospital ones to rent. I would not recomend a manual one at all. I had no luck with it.

I used a PIS which I got from a close friend - bought all new tubes, etc. for it - worked fabulous since Dylan was tongue tied and never latched well - which you would have thought SOMEONE I discussed it with - LC, nurses, etc. would have at least thought to check that - anyway sorry for the rant but I pumped for about 10 weeks and it was a GREAT pump...
