Helmets.., a fight to the end!!

I can fish/make fire/be your friend! :) Group: Members Posts: 1,537 Member No.: 171 Joined: 5-May 03	My oldest son almost (11) is pushing me beyond belief with the helmet issue. We bike almost everynight as a family and his old helmet was to small. I bought him a new one today and he CRIED, yep cried in the store! Now NY is very very strict about the helmet law. I have a cop friend who even told him that he needs one on his scooter. I have laid down the law and said no more bike rides w/o his helmet. He came home tonight and was saying to his bike..Goodbye bike, Mom has made it not fun anymore. LMAO I will make him go and I will make him wear his helmet (which is actually cool looking) if it's the last thing I do. I have explained that it is for his own safety but I think I have a vain 1o year old?? LOL "Mom, I just don't look good in it?" LOL What do you mommy's do? He even tried to bargin with me.....I will wear it after 5pm when the roads are busy!! LOL -------------------- Mommy to two wonderful boys!

Group: Members Posts: 2,795 Member No.: 26 Joined: 28-February 03	I have a friend with a son who would LOVE to talk to him - he was very very lucky, but almost had major brain damage riding his bike. And he wasn't even in traffic, it was his own fault (hit a curb, popped his tire, went over the handlebars)...... Needless to say, they are both fanatics about helmet use now......so glad he got a second chance at it. However, other than just what you are doing, I can't offer any other advice. Maybe I should show him what can happen if he doesnt wear it. Harsh yes but he will wear it! He said today when Sam wears one I will! Oy Vey! Under two in NY as the law states they do not need one, and up to 14 they have to wear one. Never ending battle! -------------------- Mommy to two wonderful boys!

Unregistered	Good for you for not giving in!! That's most of the battle there! It would be good to show him what can happen if he doesn't wear his helmet. I don't think you'd have a battle after that!

They were brainwased at school about bike safety so they think they "HAVE TO WEAR HELMETS OR THEY WILL BE ARRESTED"! I even caught my DD (8) yelling at her brother (6) that he had to wear his helmet or he wasn't riding his bike! I really hope they don't become to vain and realize how important the helmets are! I think you deserve a pat on the back for sticking to your guns on this one! My nephew is 12 and I know they can be pretty bullheaded! Keep up the good work! --------------------

Maybe it's time to get Sam a helmet, law or not - safer that way for sure!

Now Sam has a big head (lol) but even the toddler ones are way to big! I have looked at all the local places target..walmart... -------------------- Mommy to two wonderful boys!

Infant Bike Helmets I also ran across this website while looking - Getting Your Child to Wear His/Her Helmet although you've done most of it, it was a pretty good read. He should be lucky he's got a mom that cares so much, that's for sure! Tonight at the park he counted kids with helmets on.. not even a handful. The rest had no helmet. I just sorta ignored his whining...THEY are not wearing them. As soon as I said wanna race me? He forgot about the helmet all together. wink -------------------- Mommy to two wonderful boys!

His grandfather was a cop and drilled in his head what could happen and told him if he wanted to ride his bike, he would have to wear his helmet. If he didn't want to wear it, he could not ride. I am very proud of you.

So maybe, if he really does feel bad about it...you could get a helmet for eveyone?
