So what's the right age to start using deodorant?

Between all his extra curriculars, Ryan's doing a sport each night. What with all the sweat and running around, he does shower nightly, but I'm wondering when I should start him with deodorant. He turned 10 in July. I don't have a sense of smell, so I can't be a good judge of any body odor- I just try to keep him as clean as possible!

I don't want to start too early with putting chemicals on his body if he doesn't need it, but I don't want him to stink either!

Any advice? I literally have no clue what's appropriate in this aspect.

Maybe ask a close friend/family member if they think he needs it based on smell? My 10 yr old nephew uses deodorant and he definitely needs it, but I imagine it would vary based on the individual person.

I think it's individual. Robbie starting using it at age 10 I believe, he was very active and sweaty, he doesn't use it daily, but when he needs it.

Cade is 11 and he definitely has to use it. I think it is a different age for every kid. You could always ask him if he notices that he smells different after activity.

I think around the age they start puberty. I think I saw on a documentary or something that that is the age that you start to get body odour because of hormones or something

i posted about this a couple of years ago when my son's grade 5 teacher sent a letter home that he needed deoderant. i was less than thrilled with all those toxins being forced on him so young, but the pharmacist help me find a mild deoderant stick that is hypoallergenic and not heavily perfumed. when i asked the teacher why, she said some kids mature early and their parents don't deal with the odour issues and the kids are teased. ask him how he smells if you can't. if there are no issues yet, then wait.

Thanks, all!

I think maybe I'll try the doc or pharmacist and see if they can recommend something on the lighter side, like Lisa recommended. Sounds like he's right at about that age!

Nikka started around 11, she didn't necessarily need it all the time but when she didn't use it, there were moments she wished she had happy.gif

Will actually started using it last year -- and yes, he just turned 6.
In the summer he gets the worst body funk under his arms!!! He only uses a little, like one swipe, and only in the summer, but without it he'd have to bathe 2-3 times a day.
I can't wait until puberty hits!!! puke.gif emlaugh.gif
