How long should I wait?, before taking an HPT?

I've only had AF once since having Wil (he's 8 months) and it's been way over 28 days this month and no AF. I know for a fact that I don't have a typical 28 day cycle. I once had it in 42 days, so I'm trying to wait that long before testing. BUT it's sooooooooooooo hard to wait! Because truly, I would be HAPPY to be PG again. I know it sounds somewhat irresponsible if we're not TTC, but we're only using condoms at the moment. What do you think? Should I just go ahead and test? I was on Prometrium (sp?) when I got pregnant with Wil. My progesterone levels were low which could be why I was having long cycles, possibly anovulatory. So I'm afraid that maybe I just haven't ovulated yet. It's like day 36 or so. I didn't have any signs of PG last time like MS or sore breasts, so it would be hard to tell without taking a HPT. Since I've only had AF once, do you think my body just isn't on a regular cycle yet? Not that it ever was, but at least somewhere between 32 and 42 days was normal for me. I thought of getting a test but I'm quite certain I'm not so I'm waiting a couple more weeks. I know what you mean about it being disappointing if it shows negative even when your not ttc.....although, that's not at all what I would be feeling right now. I'm going to wait until day 42 since I've had that long of a cycle before...and then I'll test again. I was feeling sick today and thought...OMG...but could just be PMS too. I hate this!!! I truly thought I had my first AF last month after being PG. Maybe it wasn't the real thing and I still have yet to get the real thing. Not sure. I know it's possible to have anovulatory spotting, or break through spotting. But this was heavy and lasted about a week. I stopped BF over two months ago, so what's the deal?? I'm going on vacation in two weeks, so I hope I can figure this out by then. If AF does come, I hope she's gone by the time I leave!! I'm in a wedding and going to the beach...AF is not invited although she would be a good indicator that I'm not PG!
