I'm going to try to limit our household garbage to a 2 grocery bags per week.

Not counting recycleables, and absolutely NO food being thrown out. All organics will have to be composted.

We;re pretty good as it stands... but we could always get better.

you can totally do that. thumb.gif That's about what we go through. If you recycle and compost, its amazing how little actually needs to be thrown out.
What method do you use to compost?

I just kinda toss it all in a cardboard box.. and once in a while, dump it in my compost bin. It doesn't smell or anything.. but I get worried about attracting bugs.

doesn't your box get all wet and icky? I used a plastic garbage can for a while, but that DID get stinky. I kept it on the back porch.
I have a huge bin Dh made me in the back yard, and I use my large yard waste bin in the winter since I can't make it to my garden with all the snow.
I love composting with my red wigglers tho.

Curious, do you all save money having less garbage?

I would LOVE to compost, recycle....BUT happy.gif we don't have recyling near us anymore. We live in the country and our township used to have recycling bins, but got rid of them due to money constraints and not sure where to take it into town or if it's offered for me since I don't live in city limits.

The composting - well Dh isn't really keen on the idea but if we saved money on our outrageous garbage bill he probably would be - but it doesn't matter how much garbage we have we still get charged one price. dry.gif

No. When it's fruit/vegetable peels, I leave them on my cutting board or counter to let them dry out a bit before putting them in the box, usually until I am done making the meal and we've eaten. Same with egg shells. Coffee grounds are usually wet... but I just leave them in the filter until the next morning when I dump them before I make my next pot of coffee..they're pretty dry.

I should mention that it's not just food that goes in there - it's newspaper (shredded), it's toilet paper rolls (cut in pieces), it's anything that can be composted. The cardboard etc helps wick out the moisture from the organics.

No. Well yes. Not really. It's included in property taxes.

I think.

I don't have a "garbage pick-up bill" or anything like that. unsure.gif

Your lucky. Ours is about $45 or more a month. Dh pays the bill so I'm going by what I remember it used to be.

I only have one experience with composting. We would take the peelings and other things right out to the garden (before it had anything growing) and dump the stuff into the dirt. Then we'd kinda stir it around with a shovel.

Seemed easy enough and the garden did fairly well.
