Parenting Club Forums > General Infant Parenting > Weaning - Tips and Advice Needed

Posted by: pupsy79 Oct 5 2011, 01:20 PM
Hi,
I,m going to start weaning my little girl soon and am looking for some tips and advice etc.
Also, can anyone recommend any good weaning books. I've seen a few on the main shopping
sites but they're quite expensive, so if anyone knows of any within a skinflints price range,
I'd be grateful if you could let me know.
Thanks smile.gif

Hi and welcome! happy.gif

I don't have a whole lot of advice~ my kids are 4 and 6 and I'm having a hard time remembering exactly what I did! I don't remember them putting up much of a fuss about weaning, but I did it very slowly and gradually, giving them baby cereal, jarred baby food or finger foods in place of each feeding I skipped at first. My daughter actually didn't sleep through the night until after she was weaned, and her nighttime feedings were the last to go, but for my son who was sleeping through the night, the feeding first thing in the morning was the last one to go. As time went on the foods I was giving them in place of nursing just seemed to satisfy them for longer and so we just gradually went to 3 meals plus morning and afternoon snacks every day. happy.gif How old is your little girl? Good luck!

I quit cold turkey with all 3 of mine. but I struggled through major supply issues, so when I finally quit I had no engorgement or anything, and my supply was so low they were happy to turn to formula. sad.gif I would have loved to BF mine for way longer. I made it 3 months, 6 months and nearly 7 months with mine.

I went back to work full time when mine were 3 months old and pretty much it just happened. I didn't have enough time/opportunity to pump at work (pretty much just lunch time and sometimes I worked 10 hrs a day) so it just happened. I think I made it to about 9 months w/both, but by that time they were getting more formula than anything sad.gif

With my first I think I had 1 night of engorgement and I gave in and pumped off a little of the excess so I could sleep. Other than that I just stopped.

My first was a slow decline. More solids at mealtimes and slowing down of the nursing snacks. We finally got it down to a morning and evening nursing session then slowly shortened those until they were no more.

With my second, it was a cold turkey thing due to health issues. She was older and it was more of a comfort thing to her anyway so I put hubby on kid duty for a few days and he kept her busy enough to not even remember to try to nurse. When she did, I just distracted her. rolling_smile.gif
