I am officially at a loss.
Okay, so... for the past month I have been spending all my time and energy refinishing this bed for Al. It used to be some old lady's, then my mom's, then mine, now I am passing it down to Al. Wait for it.... . . . . . . So, I strip all the stain off it, nearly ruin the veneer, find out that it is ugly and will need to be painting, negating my past 3 weeks of painstaking work. Wait for it... . . . . . . . . I paint the dumb thing. Its cute. what ever. We go buy the mattress and box spring for it, which is an entire other "thing" that I won't get into. So, I get the frame put together, and get the bed all finished and this is what I have... . . . . . . . Are you ready? . . . . . . . . . . ![]() Oh yeah, thats right. I got a real "princess and the pea" thing going on. Oh yeah, its totally as tall as my 5 year old. If you look real close, that blue stril on the side of the bed is the safety rail. Good thing its there, sticking all of 3 inches above the mattress... she REALLY won't fall off the bed now. WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?!?!?!?!?!?!? not to mention that If ben stands on the bed he can reach the ceiling fan. Oh yeah, and did I mention that she can't get into it? oohhh... there is an idea... can you even do that? My inlaws will be staying here next weekend and will be sleeping in that bed, can adults sleep on a mattress with no box spring? |

It doesn't hurt to try it, especially since she probably doesn't have enough weight to make the mattress sag. You're so talented, it's beautiful!

I don't know how comfy it would be for adults to sleep on though. If it's extra firm, I think it would be OK. -------------------- ~*~Mollie~*~ Mom to Logan, Quentin, Ethan, Hannah, Kayla, & Abigail! |

omg -- I'm sorry but
The bed frame is absolutely GORGEOUS, though! Can you return the mattress/box spring for a 'not so tall' version? Or,, like Molly said -- ditch the box spring ? -------------------- Peggy

I think the box spring is a fairly standard size, but the mattress... well, that is a super nice memory foam pillow top that is not to hard, not to soft, that I was applauding my self yesterday for the great deal I was getting on it... -LOL. Its going to be the guest bedroom too, so I wanted a decent mattress on it, not some super flat hotel model. I can't wait for DH to some home from work and see it. |

we had that trouble with caleb's... we took out the box spring and then took the crib mattress and put it almost completely under the bed but put out enough that it was a step into the bed for him, and also in case he fell out it was a cushion.
they make taller crib rails at the one step ahead site also. its is really pretty -------------------- Stacy, wife to Peter, mom to Caleb, Jakob, and Andrew

Jason has a mattress with a bunkee board under it. It offers some support of a box spring but only adds like 2 inches to the mattress

Okay so ditch the box spring, nail some wooden slats from one side to the other and then lay the mattress on it.
It's gorgeous! |

Is that what they use on bunk beds? That's what I was going to suggest. Jamison has an antique iron bed and it has this same problem but I just added a step stool because she's older and does fine. That is too funny--can she even get on it by herself? -------------------- Brenda, a mom and wife in love with my family

Are you kidding? "I" can't get into it myself! LOL. Its taller than her dresser, and I don't want her up on there because its to high! We took out the box spring, she still needs a stool to get into it, but its much better. I'll take another pic later. |

Wow Tara that frame is beautiful. You did a terrific job. Is there a way for you to return that box spring and get the one that isn't standard. When I was out buying my new bed I noticed that you could get a box that wasn't so tall. Not sure how much of a difference it would make, but it's worth a try.

Oiy. We did the same thing with our bed.
My point is, if you just bought the mattress, is there anyway they would exchange the box springs for the thinner one? It should be perfect. If not, just take off the box springs altogether and put in some slats. You did a wonderful job on her bed, Tara. All your hard work paid off! Isn't it rewarding? |

I agree...the bed is BEAUTIFUL, you did a GREAT job
We have a set of twin beds that don't have box springs just wooden slats and it's even strong enough to hold my in-laws when they come to visit!!!! HTH This post has been edited by Brendan's_Mommy on May 9 2008, 04:57 AM |

Beautiful bed, Tara!!!
Yes, there are thinner box springs you can get. I'd see if the store will take the other one back and purchase the thinner box spring. As far as not being able to get up in it, Kylie's bed is the same way. I can't even get into it without help. DH bought a nice wooden stool and painted it himself. -------------------- ~*Karen*~
